What would this be costing per cow?

Would that be margin over concentrates only? - or margin over forage/silage + conc. ??
As it's a gross margin it's output over variable costs, feed vet and med etc. No point doing a GM and not including all feed costs. Would not have a clue about up to date costings but would probably not be to far away, don't think wheat has changed that much in 30 years.

Even if the GM hasn’t changed much, fixed costs certainly have

Jebus. That land is like the levels only with no environment agency involved. How in the world can that make sense economically?

Throw in a 2 metre sea level rise and that lot will be on the seabed, surely? Did you see the entire site was on a slab that was poured in one hit?

All those piles they were knocking in looked to be on tight centres as well!

The fill didn't look too flashy it looked like compost.

Might be that they where bought out for housing. I know from personal experience that €250k a hectare is far from unheard of, in that case you can either cash in and give half to the tax man or build your dreamfarm.

I was staggered when I went to Holland looking at cows. 2 families on farm with nice houses and cars. Go for a look round herdsman turns up in brand new Audi jumps in 100k tractor with a 60k tanker wearing slippers and goes tanking. Loading out of an underslat pit without a sign of muck anywhere. Go round the corner to see a machinery shed with everything you could imagine in it. That was fairly standard on the 5 farms we went to120-180 cows.

*all milked in robots.

With an average debt per cow in the region of £13k I believe. Madness

22k on one farm we went to. Asked a few people "in the know" and didn't get the impression many farms were going under. I couldn't really get to the bottom of it.

Can't remember if that was per acre or hectare. Either way its at least 5ppl in interest.

when I was over there 15 years ago plenty of farms with new set ups where borrowing 90% of their net worth, all held up by the demand from pig producers for land to spread slurry on.

On Thursday 26th September, we’re holding a webinar for farmers to go through the guidance, actions and detail for the expanded Sustainable Farming Incentive (SFI) offer. This was planned for end of May, but had to be delayed due to the general election. We apologise about that.

Farming and Countryside Programme Director, Janet Hughes will be joined by policy leads working on SFI, and colleagues from the Rural Payment Agency and Catchment Sensitive Farming.

This webinar will be...
