New member posting! Sorry to comment on old thread but am interested in when diff locks appeared as standard on mf tractors (I'm a deeply exciting man) father reckons all 35x's had diff lock but I hear this is not the case, also was the 135 really available without a diff lock??? Would love to hear more on the subject
dont know when it became standard, but early 135s can be without diff lock,
it was an option, but most dealers ordered 35x and 135 tractors with diff lock,
was once told it was dropped as an optional extra in the MF price list about 1966, as it was standard, and not an option

Thanks pennineploughing. It amazes me to think that you could line up a 35 3cyl with diff lock, a 35x without And a 135 without diff lock. I bet they're rare tractors!! I have a friend who has a petrol 35 with diff lock, he reckons that's a rare beast!

Another easy distinguishing feature to identify a 3cyl 35 from a 35x is the difference in the inlet manifolds. This along with the already mentioned square timing case and different style dynamo mounting makes them quite easy to tell apart at a passing glance. That said, I reckon there are many standard 35's being restored, sold and traded as 35x's with nothing more than a set of bonnet decals and a price hike to a innocent buyer.... It's similar with Super Majors, there are many out there painted blue / grey that should really be blue / orange.

Would love to see or hear about examples or a sales manual of a 135 without a diff. Also was this true with other 100 series?

And funny how on eBay red 4 cylinder 35 nearly always listed as grey and gold

My father had 4 cyl 35 from brand new -about 1962. can't remember if it had diff lock.

When he chopped it in for a s/h 65, it was the biggest tractor in the area! Pity about the brakes though.

By the time I was (legally) driving we had a 35x c/w diff lock and multipower-it was very fast on the road. Even with a cracked block (frost damage) a few years after, it would still cut a trailer load of kale every day with an old taarup side mounted chopper.

These old MF's are still good machines. As someone said "as long as they've got oil, water and diesel, they'll keep going"

Father's cousin had a 35x from new but didn't think much of it. Until someone pointed out he had the draft control level in the wrong position so it was working the hyd pump all the time!

Weve had since BRAND new a MF35 with Diff lock the tractor cost £626 new on the farm in the late 50's
i repainted most of it about 12 years ago & the only stickers i could find at the time were 35x ones.
It still runs very well mind.

Thought it was late 61 or early 62 when diff lock became an optional extra?. I have seen a Grey / copper 35 with diff lock but it was one of the 2 conversions that you could get.

Was the foot throttle standard on 135 from there launch. The first 135 that came to Orkney came up in wooden crate so they must have been launched nation wide at all dealers at same time, Smithfield show Dec 64 Ser number on the first one in Orkney was 129. There must have been a prefix but it isn't listed in my almanac.
