If you want to spend all winter cutting plastic and net and all spring taking net off the slurry pump paddle then go for it. Personally I'd stick with the clamp, pull the cover back once a week, get into the tractor and sit on my ass until all the cattle are fed.
I feed my bales out side from September to October then put the cow s in to feed clamp silage no bother with net around the pump have been using
A contractor for a few year always seem to have far to many bales for the light second cut crop either going to fast or dropping the knives to make more bales and more expensive
If your current contractor isn't making a good bale I'd find someone else to do your baling.
If you're sure that you want your own baler then Agco's parts supply would put me off Welger. The fixed chamber Welger balers also make a small bale.
Having used nothing but McHale for the last 15 or so years I'd need a very good deal to buy anything else for baling silage.
A neighbour reckons he saves about 3 pound a bale by doing it himself, says he has the same amount bales on the same acreage/ crop as the contractor had. Both using mchale's, not much else round here to be honest.
