Eh why not ?We get nowt for our tiny 15 acre patch, even though all we do is farm work, can’t even get a grant, supposed to be an agricultural contractors grant coming out this year but it hasn’t happened yet
buying now isnt going to help with the 2020-2021 position, the period in which most of the grants where paid....Best buy something quickly...
Might look at a fresh pick-up in Jan, if there are any to actually buy... Or pay off the BB Loan!
True.buying now isnt going to help with the 2020-2021 position, the period in which most of the grants where paid....
Well said. If anyone is profiteering off subs it’s the wider agricultural industry, basically anyone we buy stuff from, not who we sell too.Subsidy allow supermarkets to screw us, really? Explain that one to me because that seems rather at odds to my basic understanding of economics. BPS is a pretty minimal part of turnover or even none existent when it comes to supermarket staple of fruit, veg, salad and intensive meat and milk. Do you think Mr Tesco is now going to feel sorry for us and pay more for lower margin per ha crops of cereals, beef or lamb as subs are phase out, are they bollox. Price is driven by supply and demand, not supply, demand and what a producers has received in subs, If sub removal really has any raising effect on the domestic price of a commodity it can occur because of a reduction in supply.... A reduction of supply comes from producers being forced into cutting back or quitting production. There is an argument that perhaps subs do inflate farm costs as they do help drive demand for machinery and other inputs... but subs are not what gives supermarkets the power to screw farmers. The reality of the past few decades is subs have kept the average (or below average) beef, cereal and sheep producer, working average (or below average) land, from going bust in an average (or below average) year. As luck would have it the recent upticks in commodity values may negate the loss of subs providing they are sustained though there is little certainty that we are experiencing a new normal not just a short lived high. There is absolutely zero direct relationship between the UK value of wheat, beef or lamb and the BPS payment rate.

Never been any of those around here, nought below £100Think the golden days of grazing cheap ground are over.
It is a complete rural myth that there is any relationship between supermarket profit and farm subsidies. For starters few farmers supply supermarkets directly most of us produce commodity products which are bought by processors in the supply chain. You think if supermarkets paid a bit more to their suppliers of bread, meat and cheese that those processors would pass all that extra money down to their suppliers , not if they can help it they won't. Its basic economics, price is dictated by supply and demand and the annual "dole cheque" props up the supply side. Take BPS away and nothing changes on the demand side of the equation. Any rise in sales relating to removal of ag subs can only occur as a result of reduced supply and a reduced supply means producers who have been forced to quit. And who reports big profits each year, the supermarkets. If they paid more for their supplies ( which of course they won't) the producers would get more money which could then mean they are profitable without relying on BPS. The money would still be spent with ag. suppliers but the source would be from sales of produce and not the annual 'dole cheque'.
A lot of people will want the payment to pay bills because of paying high rentsPrime examples of why it needs changed asap. If you need the payment to pay the bills, then the best advice is pack in.
Public money for public services is the new slogan, so we will (maybe) get back to using public money for what it was intended, developing and improving our businesses.
