Hi

Be interested to know how the family have got on that were in the TV series that bought 4 acres in West Wales to be self sufficient.

Both were Vets, but dismayed by the modern way, decided to go off grid.

What are the locals saying and are they still there?

I watched it and did say to Mrs NeilO that I suspected the neighbours weren’t too happy about them turning ‘pasture land’ (as it was described🤐) into a rubbish strewn scrap heap. It would be a bad job if just anyone could buy a 4ac block wherever they liked, drag a knackered horsebox onto it, then collect rubbish all round it.
He came across as a bit of a nutter imo, whilst she appeared to have been going along with it.

Takes all sorts I suppose.

Is it not down your way @Al R?

Never heard of it? I’ll do some googling

Is this who your on about?
@GrannyAching would be the nearest I know on here

I'm quite near Beeview but don't know them. I've hardly been off the farm in the last ten months thanks to CV, though so not been out and about to chat and get people's yhoughts. There are lots of off gridders in Pembrokeshire as the council have one if the most progressive approaches to alternative housing in the UK. You wouldn't need me to tell you it's not idyllic and it takes a very special skill set to do it for real, for more than five years especially if/when you don't have the bank of ,"previous job and expensive house, now sold" behind you.

The use of the old vehicles etc was a bit strange, a bit more thought and use something better and more environmental friendly - considering their goal.

I wouldn't say he was a nutter personally, more a person that has imploded, but still able to do what is needed, in a rather unorthodox manner.

I bet there's far worse neighbours out there than them, I wouldn't mind them as neighbours to be honest, bet they keep themselves to themselves and don't go poking their nose where it doesn't belong, nutter is the wrong word, to me he just hadn't either found what he was looking for, or was finding it very hard to get to where he wanted to be.

Im always interested in these programmes - its a repeat. Id like them to return in 5 yrs and see if they have achieved it (bit more like grand designs). The trouble is these people dont realise to do something properly you need good tools. Good tools cost money. They have no money. Its all a bit dreamy too much time spent on permaculture FB pages. You cant be fully sustainable in the UK you can be better, perhaps raise your own but the pitalls are enormous. I also like to see how people with zero growing skills get on with feeding the family too.

If they are on the side of Preseli then growing anything but grass isn't going to yield much. A small plot of carrots, potatoes, leeks and cabbage maybe, for home consumption as long as they have someone on 24 hour slugwatch.

They're Newport so probably South facing and quite mild. I will investigate further.

You sum up attempting to garden at 600', North facing in the Preselis pretty accurately!

Appears they are still there - the program was old as stated above, but looking on their website - seems they may have been granted permission to stay, and they have what appears to be quite a close neighbouring house / farm?

rubbish website though..

alot if not all is to do with somewhere to live on the cheap ? do i blame them not really, try doing it by the book, buy say 10 acres start an enterprise that needs someone living there , well from personnel experience first thing you have to spend a considerable amount after land purchase on infrustructure ? then planning say that you have to have run a viable business for a minimum of 5 years with accounts, then you have to prove with animal numbers that is if its an animal enterprise the holding is viable, and a need on welfare grounds, then the council will appoint an indipendent agricultural advisor to do a report into your holding and of his view of does this justify a dwelling? if you can jump threw all these hoops then you might be lucky to be granted permission for a mobile home ? or even luckyer if you have jumps threw more hurdles and can proof through history etc etc that you have carried out the enterprise for much longer then a house is a possibility ? then the size of the prosposed house is linked to the size or value of the income generated by the holding? then after that if you are sucessful an agricultural tie is normally placed on this ? how do i know all this, well ive been threw it, in a village where my family have lived all my life ? attended a parish council meeting with my father to hear my application of a dwelling being heard, parish councillor said to my father publically and i quote, we dont want any more mansions being built hear? at which point my father left in digust but i stayed to answer their childest questions ?

Have been through similar here, we have a couple of barns housing straw and heifers on the outskirts of the next village the land all joins up to the main holding. Wanted to build a house there for my brother and his family, the locals did all they could to stop us. Eventually we postponed it as it was just not worth the hassle and brother bought a house in a different village. Thats 3 children less in the school that is desperate for kids. Revenge is best served cold, I like the idea of a windmill or 20 acres of panels that will really annoy some people.
