Whole Wheat in Creep - Lambs

Last few years I have used whole barley with a protein pellet for lambs in creep feeders and its worked well. Far cheaper than bought in pellets.

This year I have kept back my usual bit of barley to use but I also have a few tonne of wheat that never went at harvest. Thinking about adding that to the barley/protein pellet mix.

But at what ratios and what would the risks be?

With barley it is 3 parts barley, 1 part protein pellet. to get a 19% protein mix.

Thinking 3 parts barley, 1 part protein pellet, 1 part wheat., Would be around 17-18% protein I guess?

Can be fed through 3 in 1 feeder or traditional creep feeders. I always start them off on creep pellets for a week or so and then slowly move to the barley mix.

Worried the wheat might be a bit hot for the lambs when also on good grass.

I can't see that a 20% inclusion rate of wheat will hurt.

Depends how high the protein in the wheat is, I suppose, but I doubt you're going to be using milling wheat anyway. 🤷‍♂️

If you're worried, start at 10% inclusion rate and gradually work it up.

Finished this years hoggs indoors on whole wheat without issue and they motored on it after the first fortnight. Couple of dirty bums at the start but fine after a week or so. Ration was 1 part 18% Lamb Finisher Pellets, 1 part Sugar Beet Pulp and 1 part whole wheat. Eventually ditched the beet as I thought it was getting too dear and wasn’t benefitting much.
