He said he didn't want to spend a fortune and yet here people are recommending brands which price themselves around 4x higher than decent quality tools, which themselves are priced 4x higher than the dross at the bottom end of the market. Brands like Draper probably have a range in each price segment, just avoid the bottom end stuff. Teng is reassuringly expensive and are good quality, and you can get them cheaper than the list prices online. As for the Snap-on stuff, for the same price of a genuine set of Snap-ons you could buy a set of Teng for the workshop, another for the pickup, and another for the tractor. Look out for dodgy sellers of fake/stolen big-brand stuff too, and the stuff at some machinery sales / markets is so awful they aren't even worth having as a spare set for the tractor... as you feared there is some real crap to stay away from.

It’s a matter of perspective really, I use spanner’s to make a living so they have to do there job when called for. I have/had “decent” mid range spanner’s in the box and they have there place, but when you bend, open up the jaw or snap one not only do you lose some more skin but the job is stopped! so, not only do you have to pay twice for the spanner but the time lost can’t be replaced.
I appreciate top brand tools aren’t for everyone but they have their place ?

Somewhere in the UK you can get a combination spanner set where the ends are different sizes i.e.alternating. Really good idea imo. Invented by a farmer I think.

Yeh as you say was looking for middle of the road. Although reading the thread it appears you either by cheap and accept they make break / lose them or go expensive they last a life time if you look after them. I think I’m in the cheap camp I’m afraid as they are not for every day use.

For budget spanners find Silverline polished sets ok and can't argue at price, they do seem to have a wider manufacturing tolerance for their sizes as have had bolt heads start to round with a ring end then put a Snap on spanner on it and no issue.
The old britool spanners (will have made in England stamped on them) were good even if the chrome plating wasn't and if you can find a set on eBay are worth buying.
Snap on Flank Drive Plus combination spanners are a luxury that after its saved the day makes you forget about the cost......

The tool world has changed, all the brands are owned by other brands now. Powertools all have guts made in China or similar snd so on. This is why buying second hand from yesteryear isn't such a daft idea. A dip in degreaser and they can come back looking near new. Then you can spend stiff money on the higher end stuff replacing the odd spanner etc you are missing.

Always need two full sets of screw drivers. One cheap and one pricey. Use cheap set for abusing and the posh set for that odd job where the fastener needs to come out first time so help me God and not be mashed in the process.

Gedore. Coupled with the XL spanners and their combination open ended, which go from 6 to 34mm with no gaps, theres not much you can't tackle.

Got these £67 from ffx. Good range of shapes and sizes. Only thing I don't like is the sizes are etched not stamped so once they're dirty you can't see what they are
