Bale wrap will break down into balls or fine strips and wind will deposit it further.
Heavy contamination of anything similar wants full removal to land fill and top soil replaced ideally

One place I use to spread dung at regularly use to throw massive amounts of rubbish in the muck heap and I very often asked them why when they had such lovely cows would they happily Chuck plastic out for them to eat.

Bale wrap is a big lump that would break down in a relatively small area. Covered by "new wrap" every year it would layer up in situe, still not a good thing.

Astro turf on the other hand already has fine strands on it that are by their very nature of bring disposed of falling apart, those strands stick to and between hooves of cattle and get walked onto the grazing area ingested by cows and spread around the field and through the dung.
I was watching a video of a big American straw grinder/processor and they weren’t taking the net off any of the bales just dropping them straight in o_O how can anyone think that’s a good idea for cow feed

Balls or strips.

That's not micro plastics.

Fine individual strands of astro turf are impossible to collect than the balls or strips.

Plastic pollution is everywhere. We have to minimise it.
We have swapped brands of net this year dues to strands of net wrap contaminating silage when being unwrapped.

Both. Depends how long it’s been there and if driven over , sun damaged or wind blown as it will all have a influence on the breakdown of the plastic. Best land filled
I don't disagree but it is semi contained in an area.

Like to see anyone collect fibres from astro turf that have been blown or taken by cows hooves.

Always something manages to get where it shouldn't be, stone, string, wrap in muck spreaders.
It happens and can be prevented to an extent. Astro turf is a liability

I don’t disagree with Astro turf but other areas can be very similar.
Ever ploughed a field that has been used as an outdoor silage clamp?
Tyres and sheet appear from darkest earth.
Some contamination is easier sorted to landfill before mixed with soil and water and becoming a larger future problem maybe that future generations will have to suffer and correct.

You can't really compare the strands in astro turf dragged across 20 acres with a buried tyre.

Even disposal of plastics in land fill is not a long term solution.

Already in other countries landfill is being exhumed to recycle waste that was out of sight out of mind.

Was,t there a landfill site near the coast, the sea had eroded the coast away and was exposing the waste that was dumped many years before. Can,t remember what program it was on but some one would. The council responsible for this wants there ass kicking and the back hander,s paid back so the mistake can be rectified.

Yes was a programme on BBC 4

Edit

Extremely interesting about Germany digging up waste for reusing metals etc and waste buried in 1980 in UK totally preserved underground. Newspapers able to be read

There are at least two other threads on this already Stuart - one in General and one in Dairy - but all seem sketchy and lacking in detail.

@Chris F - is it worth combining them?
Multiple threads on same topic....makes it look like the forum is extra busy 🙄

It's like saying this weekends newspaper is a bumper edition....even though they have put all the stories from the rest of the whole weeks papers in it 🤣🤣

I've always said that landfill was the most logical and best disposal method for waste, because one day plastic will be so valuable they'll be digging it up and recycling it. As long as the sites are well prepared and managed, then the harm to the environment is minimal, and all the resources are still there for use another day.

Certainly when the first tub grinders appeared thry made a thing ofbthe fact, you judt fed the bales in whole strings and all.
One reason I changed from grinding to chopping through a forager after strings removed. At one of the first American promotions a journalist fell in to reappear as a red stain in the chaff before anyone had realised what happened .
