Food Shortages

Did mine in 4 days and the test was on the 5th day. Sharing with another trainee too.
Farmers that already know how to reverse a trailer have a huge advantage.

Learning to pass a test is the quick bit though.

First you have to get a Medical, apply for a provisional licence (huge backlog at DVLA) book and pass a theory test, book a test date (usually done by the training provider, but again big delays "due to covid")

You won't be let out on the road as soon as you pass the test either. You need to do 35 hours Driver CPC training (again delays "due to covid") and get taught the tachograph/driver hours rules (which isn't part of the test!)

And most reasonable employers are aware that passing a test is not the same as being able to drive, so may well want you to do a bit more training before you are let loose on your own.

5 years ago, three months from getting your Medical to driving on your own was considered good. That was with the employer offering loads of support such as mock theory testing, in house training etc.

Now I suspect it's probably twice that.

Bit like saying you have a certificate and expecting to drive a forage harvester next day.
Don't think driving a fuel tanker week after your test a good idea either. Start by delivering some biscuits to Tesco

queues for fuel everywhere today?
Crazy.

Yes it is crazy, especially after hearing on the BBC radio news this morning that that the total number of BP filling stations that ran out yesterday was 5 !!!
So as a result of 5 out of over `10000 filling stations having no fuel we end up with panic buying.

Its the same with the supermarkets, we went to do our weekly shop yesterday at the nearest Tesco extra, no shortages of anything, the only shelf that looked less stocked than usual was bottled water, hardly an essential. Meanwhile the supermarket bosses are sending out warnings of Christmas stock shortages etc. A cynic might say that they want us all to buy the Chrsitmas puddings, chocolates, twiglets etc early as we will then not be able to resist eating them and will then buty a 2nd bactch.

It’s not all rosy in Oz.
Nor in the UK.
It’s what happens when you tell people it’s O.K you don’t have to work and stay at home it’s safer. Well who actually is going to do the work of picking, packing it and getting it to market? Food isn’t in short supply it just doesn’t pick itself.

Not really, we waste / throw out at least 30 % of all food produced, in fact, waste food is a major contributor to climate change . . .

so - there is a fair bit of fat left in the system if we just got a bit more efficient with distribution & usage of food, more do than production
And do you think ‘we’ will change? I don’t. Look at the lock downs, arguably the best think for climate change and reducing food waste; I don’t know bout Oz (but I could guess by the recent protests) but here people have been desperate to get back to ‘normal’ consumption, lifestyle etc. I don’t see things changing anytime soon.

Christmas dinner at risk they say, what the hell do you need for Christmas dinner ? One turkey (other meats or a veggie option are available) bag of taters, sprouts, carrots or parsnips and a christmas pud. If people just bought what they could eat and didn't waste 60% of it the supermarkets would regret their doomsaying.

I've got the best crop of apples I am ever likely to have but can't pick them cos Mum's bad and I have to see to her first. Very frustrating but Mum has to come first.
I can pick a bin per hour which is good. Getting the hour to do it is the challenge right now.

I know this isn't the thread to say it but needed it to say it somewhere.

Well done Dave, family comes first.
