Hello! First time poster, longtime observer,
I have printed off and handed out over 200 BFU flyers today at my local livestock auction.
I was met with positive response from everyone I’ve spoken too,
One chap told me he gave up his cows because of Red tractor,
Others said they feel unrepresented, and as members on here have said can’t understand the NFU and aren’t renewing membership.
Only thing which was negative was that nobody has heard of the BFU!
We need to get the message out about the BFU for it too succeed any which way we can,
Any suggestion’s or willing volunteers to do the same at their respective local Markets would be appreciated thanks!

I do wonder if BFU shouldn't approach the likes of Mole Valley Farmers, Barkers Animal Health, livestock market reports etc etc to ask them to put a flyer on, or in, their monthly newsletters.

BFU really should charge more than £10 to Members so this can be paid for.

Well done to you @Eronce for doing your bit 👍
I’ve got a feed supplier friend handing some out and there will be an advert in the cheshire farmart next month with a bit of luck, they offered a half page spread FOC.
So yeah anyway to spread the word 👍

Will need a lot of members 10 pounds to pay an advert in farmers weekly.

Membership is way too cheap.
Hopefully one or two who can afford will help stick a few extra quid in for an advert.
Also quite a few publications will let you have the space for free if you’re a non profit making organisation,

Thanks Eronce,

I'll monitor the new member signups and see is we get many from your area, so then we'll know how successful it is.

BFU really feels like it's on the up.

I haven't been personally involved, but some members have been approaching markets, Livestock Auctioneers Association, farm supplies places etc. Not certain who's been supportive or not, but think there has been variability.

It does need to be more than £10 really, but we didn't want a big barrier to entry. It's something members could be consulted on in future. No immediate plans though.

We need to be able to employ someone full time, then it should really take off. Not their yet.

The aim would be to become bigger than the NFU, then BFU members can decide what they want on a One Member One Vote basis.

^^^ Instead of the President of the NFU deciding what's good for us.h

I honestly think some people think farmers aren't capable of knowing what's good for them, and it needs a better person to make the right decisions for them 🙄

Advertising is fine but readers tend to skip past ads and read the articles. Would it be worth asking some of the magazines to do a piece on the BFU, which would also not cost anything.
I also think £10 subs is too low. Sometimes when things are cheap they are perceived to be not as good. If it was doubled it would still be great value.

A full page advert was run in the Farmers Weekly paid for by the steering Committee members .
No BFU funds were used.
4 adverts were run by Gisburn Market on their market reports also paid for by a donor.
If anyone wants to help promote the BFU then please use whatever avenues you can but contact one of the committee members for a PDF copy of the leaflets for printing.

promoting things has a cost - ag publication are businesses and don’t do anything for free.! in fact they are VERY expensive

Social media and word of mouth are free. - and also VERY powerful so unless BFU finds a wealthy backer or members are prepared to pay MUCH higher membership fee it’s going to be down to individuals to promote BFU to others

“asking”. aka “paying” ……… very little you read is printed without someone paying, even the bits between the “adverts”
