£40,000 for new Defender!?

A quick bit of googling is showing a pound to 1.32 dollars so on a simple comparison not dissimilar to pick up price over here.

You are paying over $120000 for a new one here, converted to RHD.
Ford Australia don't bring them in.
A new Hilux / Navara / Ranger etc dual cab with all the fruit is about half that. A basic work version is substantially cheaper
A brand new Landcruiser 79 dual cab tray back with all the fruit is about $80000
An Iveco Daily 4 x 4 ( as mentioned earlier by @Cowabunga ) is around the $100000 mark

Just been reading a motoring article that estimates the new Land Rover Defender is likely to cost anything between £40,000 and £70,000!

Obviously yet another Land Rover model aimed at the bloated Chelsea tractor market and way above the budget of most working farmers. Looks like I will have to stick with my twelve year old Freelander and my limited use Discovery One that dates from the pre Ordovician era.

Never mind, didn’t really want one anyway, and a good excuse to keep the wallet safely chained and padlocked behind bars down in the cellar for another year.

Might not happen yet if JLR go to the wall because of the their major miscalculation of their high end vehicles which people are not buying. Their compounds are stuffed full of vehicles not being shifted. They are standing down haulage companies and getting rid of staff.

I use a single cab 15 year old L200. Had it since new. More load space than a defender for of fraction of the expense. Maybe doesn't tow quite as much but it's quite adequate.

I don't believe anybody who says they NEED a Landrover of any description to run an agricultural business. They are only bought now as status symbols or as sort of works of art, though with all the style of a breeze block on wheels I really don't see the attraction.

Begs the question why haven’t LR brought out a double cab? The demand is there due to business and vat implications, their off road ability is well documented and the success of the Amaork shows there is a demand for high end pick ups.

Well, I reckon my 15 year old Land Rover also bought from new suits the job better than any pick up and despite all the talk of unreliability it has been reliable and cheap to run, indeed , when dad had a bit of a prang in it some years back the repairers said cost to repair was less than half of similar damage to a pickup, IIRC from the time, a Land Rover headlight was about 40 quid against 170 for the brand of pickup that they also sold, the list would go on very similar for parts like wings and bumper.

you can buy a new "old" defender right now from Twisted - standard spec as it came from the factory for £65,000 - they have a hundreds of them parked up

best farm truck I've ever had - not many farm trucks you double your money on !

of course no one is paying £40k plus, they are putting them on PCP and paying the depreciation ad infinitum !

PCP means they are actually letting someone else worry about depreciation and simply renting the use of it , a lot smarter than proud fools who insist on owning tragically depreciating assets IMO in many cases - not that depreciation has ever been an issue with Defenders ( appreciation more likely on the last model !)

Still see a few 130's run by utility companies but mainly Navaras. Defenders are in the minority at any farming event. Wonder what the army will be using in a few years time ? Can't imagine a military parade with all Japanese vehicles.

Why would they want to devalue their premium brand status with a mere pick up?

If they are going to be selling this thing for 40K and above do you really want them on the roads being driven like transit vans? It devalues the brand.

They will sell shed loads at 40K+, you just watch. You can't buy a Mini now without options for less than 20K...

Depends heavily on how many they are building - early cars will probably make owners money ( slightly dependant on the state of the economy at launch however) and if supply is limited that will probably be the case for a year or so if previous model history repeats itself

Of course, supply will be limited initially and then you get people paying money to get your build slot and all the carp that goes with it. Quite why anyone would part with money over a Defender, brand new or otherwise, is beyond me.

I'm not sure why everyone thinks this won't be a farmers car ?

It strikes me its going to be very like the old Discovery 4 and about the same or lower priced as that was - The Discovery has been a incredibly popular car with farmers, any ag show I go to has car parks full of them

Its clearly not a pick-up but again the Discovery commercial was popular and liked so why wont a commercial version of this be the same ? again price sounds similar to the old disco 4 comercials were

The main reason a lot of famers dislike JLR product these days is because they cant afford them, that doesn't make them a bad car though. I pretty sure no one would throw a RR vogue back at them if they gave them one ! its one of the best every day family cars ever IMO

My current defender is worth more today than I paid for it, the several I've owned before ALL cost me very little to own. All were cheap to run and reliable. Its to a car I would want as my only car but in the role it does there is nothing better and certainly nothing cheaper

There is not many cars you can say that about, I think thats a fair reason to want one
