My three are purely pets but one comes from welsh working stock, one very well bred with a pedigree as long as your arm and the old lady soon to be 14 came from working stock but she is deaf, lazy and sleeps as much as possible.one of mine hates squirrels and goes berserk when seeing them and chasing them.she also hates the airline and will bite it continually as she does the pressure washer and barks continually.they all bite wheels and anything going round.the well bred one rounds up any machinery from tractors to lawn mowers.they all chase cars from inside the hedge so no real danger there.they will bite strimmers and chainl saws too given the chance aswell.all currently at rest.

I could do anything with the dog in my avatar in her heyday she was something else rarely had to tell her to do anything she was already doing it, unfortunately lost her a couple of months ago it was a bloody sad week, always worked her with another bitch who on a Monday morning when we were getting lambs in for Welshpool would bolt straight out of her kennel when you loosed her out straight for the field with the lambs in very often she'd have them at the gate waiting

Poor Jack was poorly and very thin in February with a stomach lump and something on his liver scan. Wouldn't make lambing but some steroids had him eating and running around and now back to his 11 year old self. Terrified of anything which sounds like thunder but keeps up-to-date on all international news and will watch wildlife programmes all day

The one on the right (the old bitch, who looks like butter wouldn't melt) hates foxes with a vengeance.
She's also not too keen on any passing black dog (of any breed). She'll go out of her way to beat one up (we've had a few vet bills from disgruntled dog walkers who's pooches have been victims  )

The young dog, on the left, has the potential to be pretty good if I don't manage to feck him up.

My collies have caught rabbits, squirrels, hares, rats, birds, fox, muntjac and roe so far. Very nearly a fallow as well but the small bitch couldnt hold it!
My current top bitch has caught 2 greyhounds/lurchers, 2 whippets, a Labrador, a whippypoo -or somesuch bollix- and an old English (could only get mouthful of hair with that last'un)
As you can see, longdogs are a fave,
Vets bills into 4 figures now....sodding creature
Has to live indoors until needed, or nightfall comes.
(as far as i'm concerned, use the footpath at night, take yer chances).

her mother preferred homo sapiens, which was much better, as the repairs were generally 'free on delivery'
her fearless and peerless granddad would take chunks out of anything that passed his way...deer, other dogs, foxes, foxhounds, pretty much anything. (didn't mark the sheep though, so that was fine by me)

Cleverest dog I have ever owned by far was a German shepherd. She was with me 24/7 and I am not ashamed to say she slept on my bed at night. She hated foxes and vacuum cleaners in equal measure. I don't know how she knew, but she would wake me up if there as a fox around and go to the back door and whine softly. Open the door and she was out like greased lightning.

The current three are rabbit mad. There are holes so deep that all three can disappear below ground and out of sight at the same time. A visiting 'badger expert' thought the holes are badger setts. I have to set aside hole repair days and tip loader buckets of dirt down the excavations in an effort to keep things tidy, but one area in a corner is their play pen. They still dig it because the rabbits remain in residence and, frankly, I've given up!

So… don’t make racist remarks in front of him?? 😉😂

Ive given up and mine now sleeps on the end of the bed, she can open doors, and break handles if you change them to knobs so she cant open them.
She hates water a mudd and working in winter she steps over puddle with grace.

She has her morning crap in the fox set in the old quarry every day, she pines and wines if we dont go their before the day starts.

Rarely have to give her any commands, with a look of an eye she will have the sheep waiting by a gate, and flush into pens if their set up.

Shes almost silent, not overly bothered about people but if she likes you she will say hello, if you dont like dogs she will flash her teeth and torment passers by.

She once got attacked by two off lead staffies, well known Rhinopotomous owner, I was pretty happy when Sums just went into stalk and crouch as the staffs went for her, patiently and she got the lead dog by the throat and held it under water in the ditch before flipping the smaller one on its arse, she was covered in cuts and worse for wear but she put the two rathounds in the place. Mrs Rhinopotomous was fuming her pride and joy had been sorted out and nearly drowned. Two weeks later one got shot down the road after killing two sheep.

Since then I wont exercise Sums off farmland as she will silently seek and side hammer any terrier types.

She adores Retrievers though and seeks them out and just rolls over infront of them in total submision!

when I was training my first collie (I’d only be 10/11 so definitely a case of the blind leading the blind) I had got her consistently penning the 12 Welsh mountain shearlings Grandad had leant me for the job. I was so proud I asked him too come watch the next day. (BIG mistake)
Well Meg split these 12 ewes into 12 singles, ran 1 over the wall, 2 over the fence into next door and then stood in the middle of the field with her tail up and a gormless happy look on her face. I went back too the gate very red faced where Grandad was leant watching. He took his cigar out of his mouth and told me “next time you make a balls up like that, as soon as it starts shout “DIVIDE” as loud as you can. Then it looks like you meant it too happen” 😑😑

Pat McGettigan told me a novice sheep dog trainer pal had asked if he could use his hogs to train a young dog to pen strange sheep. Pat said to go ahead and he'd be welcome.

The poor man came in after an hour grumbling that his dog just would not learn and could not pen the sheep. He was so exasperated that he was on the point of giving up. Not really fair not to own up that your own pups had got at the hogs when they'd been left in the pen during lunch break though, but it was kinda funny!
