Work out your kg/ha (14500kg÷56=258kg/ha)
Multiply kg/ha x10= 2580, divide 2580 by your tgw (2580÷42=614 seeds/m2)

So with seed rate 258.93
14500kg/56ha = 258.93kg/ha (seed rate)
Simple calculation I use is:
Times seed rate by 100
258.93x100 =25893
Then divide by the thousand grain weight to get seeds/m2
25893/42 = 616.5seeds/m2

And if you what to sow at a given seed rate, say 500seeds/m2, the calculation is just reversed to find seed rate:
500x42 = 21000/100 = 210kg/ha seed rate

Thanks every one for your help we are using a Vaderstad drill with seed eye planting by numbers.
The reason we plant thick is it help to combat BG
The seed is our own has a 98-germ tested and cleaned and dress

With my experience of seed eye the drill rarely agrees with the TGW written on the bag.
The question is always which is correct? I tend to say the drill as bags from the same seed lot can be different. It’s a real head scratcher.

You’ve hit the nail on the head there for why I think seeds/m2 is a complete waste of time. Deciding on the drilling rate using a mug full of seed out of 10t of seed? Then applying a (semi-known) germination and a completely (guessed) field loss figure??? Which not only has to take in current field/weather conditions but also the future ??? No thanks

Certainly doesn’t help when ordering seed by the m2. Only had the drill a couple of years but i’ve not had a seed shortage yet where the drill has thought the seed was a larger tgw than the merchant 😂

That’s interesting…so each bag you order you have to look at the actual seed numbers to see if you have enough for a field say? Working out area left and converting back and forth to m2 back to numbers? That’s pretty dedicated. The theory is sound if all samples were representative, growing and soil conditions are consistent and everyone went back to individual seed coulter metering from the Simba freeflow rather than bunging it all down one whole and then accurately re-separating it into 48 even streams or whatever…

I’ve learnt that it’s very easy to get lost in a rabbit hole with it. I tend to put a bag in, see what the drill thinks and take it from there. Inevitably i end up drilling late after maize and end up with some quite high seed rates but only order at around my starting rate. Would rather by a bag at the end than have any left over. Last year with a low tgw the seed eye was way out from what some bags said. You just have to get used to the seed not necessarily running out when you want.

But i do like it, no calibration and it got my osr spot on this year and last. One thing i have learnt is update the software each year.
