Would track and trace be mandatory in any show if it were to go ahead.
Imagine a show goes ahead and say a farmer picks up covid, then goes the mart and spreads it there then marts all closed down is it worth it?

With the average age and BMI of a farmer an outbreak of Corvid from a show would have a serious effect!

The vaccine will be safe. Hence the billions of money spent on trials and time to get it to market. As far as I’m aware they are using existing vaccine technology anyway.
Might put some land on the market!

Now I know this thread is about shows and the likelihood of them going ahead or otherwise, and many have articulated their points better than I for them happening or otherwise,
But,
@serf @startinghandleit is your choice not take a vaccine.
This antivax crap really is sh!t,
So for clarity please tell us which vaccines are killing and damaging people or animals.
More specifically where the vaccination outcomes are worse than the disease in question,
And while we are at it the mortality rate in your livestock that are not vaccinated.
Thanks
Remember the Thalliodomide problem ?

even if a vaccine is found it will be a long time before we all get it - imagine the logistics involved !

i wouldn’t hold out all hope for a vacation - some viruses have no vaccine (AIDS etc). We might just have to learn how to live with this

Uk show business was overdue some changes, it had become overcrowded and im not sure it was working for exhibitors, the internet has changed the way people make buying decisions for ever and marketing strategy has evolved with that change

some shows will have a place post covid but i think there will be a lot less of them. The bigger shows are the most fragile i would say, how can they afford to loose a complete year or more of income ?

imagine how long you could keep farming without a harvest!

There are no plans to vaccinate under fifties unless there are underlying health concerns. No government officials will give any hope of " mass events" yet,in fact they are at the end of the queue and when so many things need booking and paying for up front,no show organisers will want to commit anything until there is more light at the end of the tunnel

I've recommended sheep judges, to the county shows that run classes for our breed as normal.
Most shows are running a skeleton staff in their offices at the moment.
None are sure if they can go ahead and personally I think all the early shows will have to cancel and the chancrs for the rest must be pretty slim for 2021.

Well I'm going to start training some heifers when they all come in just for my own sanity, the shows were my holiday and escape. If they don't go to any shows they will just be ready for hopefully another year.

Quite agree Clive, the Yorkshire Ag Soc and Royal Highland Show are really suffering, loss of the annual show is hard enough, but the loss of site & building rental income from other shows throughout the year is crippling.

The RHAS has launched a £2m cash raising fund and YAS took out a substantial Corona loan earlier in spring.

You may well be right. It seem like a “reset point” for the industry or should I say the supply industry. It’s not just Ag’ —all shows will be under review in many industries.

Many of the shows will not happen again large and small shows take this last year most industry's are back in working and selling with out the cost of the shows.
There will find new ways of getting to there customers.
We have bought three large items this year with out going to shows.
Shows are so last century.
The internet and good dealers will be stronger and the way forward once people start doing things differently they very really go back to doing things the old ways.
I have enjoyed many good days out going to shows but that was then not now people will have to wake up and smell the coffee or words to that effect.

Smell the coffee? If they go to a show on the right trade stand they will get a free coffee to drink

Depends on what you believe is purpose of shows?

For me they are very much a social event. For people's mental health I hope they start again. Biggest earner at our local show is the beer tent.

Secondly they are a great link between the countryside and the public. It gives people from towns/cities a chance to get close up with animals and us as farmers a chance to educate them and promote our industry.

Chae all well and good but when we have the mass media peddling fake news and rhetoric designed to undermine the industry then I fear it will take more than a local show to promote us
But granted the industry has to start somewhere

It's the only chance we get. Plenty people moan about the nfu and other bodies not doing anything. But local shows give us a chance to do it face to face. If they are paying a tenner to get in so obviously have a interest already.

My wife runs education tent and is normally over run with kids and parents wanting to take part in activities and do quizzes.

One thing she learned from a teacher forum. Weird they exist too! Was that some schools were watching online livestock sales as part of classes! Kids loved seeing animals and it also helped with maths seeing weights and prices.

I think you're right.
Shows will have to adapt and just become 'our interface ' with the general public.

Gone are the days when we went to shows to see /buy/express interest in the latest equipment/talk to grain and fert merchants, etc - we have Cereals, Lamma, Grassland events, etc, etc for all that nowadays.

Just look how successful open farm Sundays have become. A lot of the public like to see what we do. Shows will have to become more for them and not us.

50000 staff
50 per day
20 days
50 million treated

when I was at school 1 nurse could do 4 classes in a morning

if you do not have the vaccine you have to stay locked down

Have to agree. They are very much a social event here in the borders. Each town putting on its own event. The craic with the guys setting up on the week before the show and taking down after is worth the work in itself. For the vast majority of farmers working on their own all the time, it's great to have a bit of group chat and many hands to help.

Small shows have not been "trade" events for years. They are just a way of catching up with friends old and new, and if we can educate the public, even a tiny bit, so much the better.

We are lucky many of the main dealers, feed merchants, and farm supplies/ vets , still see it as a good way of communicating with their customers. They don't do it for the business, very much just to give a little something back to the community that supports them
