Defender here would be 5th for big loads. Disco 3 would be in sport mod and sort itself out being auto, I fine in normal auto it is for ever changing

Having discussion ,with a chap today , about trailering with his pickup , when has cattle box on ,
now do you run easy ,say 2/200 rpm in 5 th doing 50 odd , or let it labour a bit more in 6 th at 16/1800 ,
he flogs it in 6 th ,
i said we run in 5 th and few more revs ,uses same fuel when fully loaded , and just seems to go better
My dmax was more economical doing 60 in 5th with trailer. Would need to be doing to side of 65 before 6th was comfortable

There will be an engine speed where the engine is making the most torque for the least fuel being injected, any gear and engine speed that gets close to that would be best. I'd guess most cars have their 6th or top gear optimised for the maximum legal limit, I know in my car 6th is pretty tall and leaves the engine with nowhere to go if you try to use it at lower speeds.

Find exactly the same thing when towing my match ploughing gear around, 5th mostly unless its dead flat on the motorway and need to get home in a hurry. But 6th and anything below 65 forget it, it's almost as if the turbo isn't on boost. And that's with a re-map but it goes along very nicely in 5th
