PS, the big tubes on the cover wheel arms are weights?
Yes they have 65 mm round bar inside them I can put three in each but only running one weight in each at the moment . With guttlers fitted full spring pressure and no weights I lifted the arm at the guttlers end and the weight was 12 kg with three weights in it was 38 kg , some of the American JD parts websites recommend 50kg per closing wheel .

Is your planned gutler replacement going to do away with the weights ?

How are your weight tubes fastened to the arms ? I can see why more weight on the gutlers would help in a lot of situations

85% closed but plenty of seed on so hopefully will be ok . Yes still use weights just one in today and full Spring pressure slot was just crimped like a pie crust in the really wet places . Going to work on a replacement for the guttlers this winter . And Will before you say it I don't want those spike wheel things !

Thompson wheels are brilliant. (y)

But if it very very very wet they won't to a great job. In 2012 I had a bit of trouble with them too but it was too wet and slugs munched everything anyway. I wouldn't imagine slot closing is that big a deal now there is so much humidity around (slugs and birds excepted)

Yes close the slot from both sides and a better spring set up probably with some sort of screw adjuster on the spring . I don't want to use the stock JD springs as they don't give consistent pressure .my weight tubes just have two pieces of 50x 4 mm flat either side of the arm with a pinch bolt .

If tacky as today was I take Spring pressure off firming wheels and still get build up on the sides. One of the French farmers Andy Howard visited had chains around closing arm to hold them compleatly up. They aren't needed when conditions are damp IMO but essential to get good seed soil contact when it's dry, much more important.

Just a comment as a 1st yr 750a user and still learning. I'm very impressed with what the drill can do in many conditions from plough/press type seedbeds through min till to DD in 4 foot high covers. I drilled a headland (contracting) a couple of weeks ago that would have filled the guts of a Vadi in 5 yards, the JD skipped over it with low draft requirement, little tractor wheel spin and the wheat has come up row perfect.

I struggle to get that much slot closure in decent conditions early October

Was there any cultivation as doesn't look much residue if osr? It is it bean stubble?

Is there much silt in that soil?

Drilled a missed breed oct 20th and whole drill smeared in clay. A very regrettable miss with hours cleaning off....
Hi John , all these pics are bean stubble that has has one pass with our rotary chain Harrow straight after the combine . There is a small amount of silt but it's mainly pretty heavy land

I know it's an old thread but, I am getting a lot of stalling depth wheels, the discs are about 250 acres old and building packed mud against the disc and depth wheel and back of depth wheel (gauge wheel) especially behind the tractor wheels (cant show pic as dropped iphone in the field yesterday) the gap is about 3- 5mm every now and again having to clear the discs wheels with a screwdriver, i have dust coming up behind the drill and would say conditions not far off nearly good to good, we are rolling behind slot closing fairly well, i wondered whether better to get a set of spoked wheels, are there different options and do other manufacturers make them to fit, or is it a waste of time and carry on and stop moaning.

Regards Big Al
