Accidents caused by farm spillage

I've no idea of the OP's motives or if they're genuine but there seems to be a few comments suggesting spilling grain is just something that happens. FFS if you cant do something simple like getting a load of grain from A to B without spilling it on the road, then go find another line of work, that isn't so hard for you.
That applies to farmers or trucking companies/drivers

That person going a bit quick and sliding on the grain could be your partner or child.

I’ve hit spilled grain when driving. It’s like black ice and completely invisible, but without the benefit of a weather forecast to predict it. I skidded across the road and took a fair distance to get grip/ control again. No way could you blame the driver for this one.

And no, I wasn’t speeding at the time - I was hauling straw with a 30k box.

Any victim blaming is in very poor taste - the injuries here were not trivial and we are lucky that the industry isn’t discussing another fatality.

I once spilt some grain on our entrance to our yard (also used as a light industrial park) we have a motorcycle mot tester in one of the units, unbeknown to me at the time one of his customers dropped his bike on it. He did find me out and actually said it was his fault as he should have been driving according to road conditions. I felt most put out as clearly I had spilt it and as a result he fell off. So a discussion ensued where we both were apologising to each other.
Fortunately he had crash bungs and did very little damage so we shook hands and that was that.
I nipped down and swept up my spillage.

Would the farmer or the operator be liable? Also if there is more than one farm using that road how could you pin down the guilty party? Does everyone brush off all the places grain gets after tipping before setting of back?
Errrr yeah. Leaf blower in the store when tipping and both the lads know to use it or expect an arse chewing when I see grain in the yard or drive. No excuses

I would like to bring to your attention an accident I had while riding my motor bike on the A6006 on Saturday 6/8/22 at about 19.00 I ended up crashing my motor bike on a lefthand bend because a local farmer had dumped a load of corn seed across the carriageway from an overfilled trailer.
The result was a torn left kidney, 4 days in hospital, 8 weeks recovery time. I have been riding for 60 plus years and this is my first major off.
Even before I left the scene someone in a 4 person cab vehicle had arrived and was sweeping up the evidence.
Could anyone can supply the above farmers details please. I have photos of the scene but can not attach them.
Email [email protected].
Regards

Tony
My sympathy goes out to you We dont mend as fast as we used to i am shure it wasnt spilt intentionally unlike muck off tractor wheels that happens time and time again and I am not saying you been 75 plus has anything to do with it as you have been driving on the road for 60 plus years but i have been driving motorbikes on and off for over 42 years on the road and yes having corn on a road would not off helpt at all but should you not off been driving so as to off slowed down stop if you see cow /horse droppings on the road or stones/ gravel
Etc
I am not a speed merchant on a motorcycle but i drive so as to stop in the distance i can see as i have only two wheels unlike in car driving on the road i drive faster
I live nr a place called devils bridge (a big motor bike meeting place) kirby lonsdale and it seems like every weekend some one has a bigg off and sometimes fatal heading to hawes and the surrounding lanes/roads due sometimes tractors pulling out off fields or overtaking them and sometimes nobody els involved but it never seems to be the bikers fault as you are very venerable on two wheels
As you stated they came to clean it up and with the price off corn and the outlay in growing it they may off had a leak in a trailor or a faulty door and came back asap. it happens but that is why country roads are dangerous place
Hope you get better but sh!t happens and often at nobody's fault just wrong place wrong time.
Ps nothiny to do with it but i lost a 21 year old brother in a motorbike accident nr 47 years ago but i still road bikes as soon as i could sh!t happens

I live on a road which is a racetrack for bikes. We avoid certain jobs on weekends due to them. The police have said they can go as fast as they want as long as it’s between the villages. Accidents are frequent some fatal. Many of the older residents in the area won’t go out in their cars in fine weather or weekends due to fear of being in an accident and being blamed.
They always blame the road conditions the problem is speed

Live in a similar spot here on a fairly bit of straight road and the speed on some not just bikers it’s frightening, I’m a biker and don’t condone it for a second

Sorry but.
Christ you lot are above the law,
Genuine or not, he has a point,
I Do a fair few miles, for work, see it everywhere.

Similar the other day, taking farmer customer to view a machine on site. We followed a large J D tractor, all over the place, weaving, oblivious of us behind, I commented bet he is on his phone, at that point the young driver put phone to his ear, say no more,
not easy to see grain on the road and it doesn't take much to unseat a rider at any speed

We spilt 1.5 tons of peas out of trailer a fair few years back over a 4mile stretch, last load in at around 1am
Phoned 999 and spoke to a police controller and told her of our predicament, she asked if we had plenty of brushes as she had 6 highway officers sat in the motorway rest area and they could do with some excersise.
For us it was just the junctions where the tractor trailer slowed down which had a issue most of the peas were in the field or on our farm drive /yard but the fact is yes we made a mistake and yes we stood up to our responsibilities.
None of us are perfect and plod were happy to oblige
We had a small spillage of wheat on the corner of a junction this harvest but it was cleared up within 10min

No one seems to bother about getting it all back to the shed these days . Round here grain on the road is all too common at field gates junctions corners etc .

When I grew up on a small family and learnt the job I got a bollocking if any was spilt . To be fair it's not easy getting a good load on a trailer now with the speed the combine discharges at but no point having it running over the sides .

We had a fair spill a few years ago when a hydraulic door wasn't shut properly and the lad that was helping us at night trailed wheat all through town roughly 1.5 miles. There was enough that the police managed to follow the trail back to the shed 🤣. Half an hour I had it swept up with the bucket brush

There is a grain slick on the road just along from here, on a bend just ready to kill a motor cyclist, caused by overfull trailer pulling out. Would have been fairly easy to brush it into gutter. Have to assume some don't give a s**it, and leave it to public liability insurance.
There is no excuse, sorry to OP for your troubles. If you have a genuine case, ask your insurers to seek compensation from landowner involved. It is the only way some will ever learn.
