AI in sucklers

...Pay a semen storage with genus every month then the price of the straws on top which range from £10 - £60/70 ish. Each visit from the technician is also charged on top as well.

Conception rates last year have been fairly good , struggled in the heat with detection.

Hope this helps. .

Assuming you spot the bulling alright, it all depends on how good your AI man is...

Currently looking at some AI options for my first go with it this year.
What’s you Simmental guys thoughts on Dinton Nautical?

Had 16 calve to him last year. Tends to run about a week over, and wouldn't put him on heifers but only assistance on 2 sets of twins. Good temperament, and make good replacements that will calve at 2 yrs old. Steers are decent but think there would be better out there.

This is true. We’ve got 3 different technicians on our round. One of very fast and the others a bit more methodical. I’m going to see who has the best conception percentage, something we haven’t done before.

Good plan on your part. We use Genus and over the last, I think, three or maybe four years we have had three chaps come out. One proved a total waste of time and I won't have him again - he's never had a hit and although it's bl**dy annoying, it makes more sense to miss a go than waste money on him (I'm not sure he's still with them), a pity because he's a pleasant fellow. The second one is a young fellow who is a graduate and he's been a couple of times and scored.

The third, as well as being a very pleasant fellow, hasn't missed yet - obviously that is a very hard rate to keep up and I don't expect him to. He is also very helpful in sharing advice and isn't 'painful' in doing so. Can't score him too highly, I'm sure others around Carmarthen know him, TW. (y)

thanks, yeah, might be best to catch them next time.
Out of interest then...what about a heifer that was sleeting but never saw it riding so wasnt sure if we should do it, anyways got the AI man to have a look after he`d done another and he said it should be ok...so we did it.
Next day heifer was mad a bulling and sweated up, so in hindsight done bit soon...wonder what the chances of a hold are there?!

@Beames I'm pretty sure we'll have the same AIs if you're with Genus. Done the strike rates for the same reason as you, one is almost done before the yoke is on the cow whilst the other has a chat.

Fast one 42%, steady one 56% success on 1st service. Fast one 80%, steady one 66% success on 2nd service. I've not included cows we culled after 3rd failed service as its just bad luck for whichever AI served them. 1st service success probably depends more on if we were trying to bring calving forward for the following year.

Out of the 2 relief technicians, one had 100% 1st service failure (1 cow only), other one had 100% 2nd service success (3 cows)- small sample size to be saying one is rubbish and the other is amazing though.

Be interested to hear how your numbers work out
