I disagree - for the 2018 harvest I had good gross margin results from canopy management tools used on thick crops. Mostly from saving N rather than enhancing yield.

4 years of no fungicide trails here and better MOIC from no fungicide every year

didn't do any this year and yield were decent again

I think NIAB recently published some data that backs that up?

If you do decide to regulate growth, i would use some tebuconazole, as it's cheap and will primarily offer some disease protection

I haven't seen that recent data but older NIAB TAG work showed a net positive MOIC from fungicides in most years. You're happy enough to self insure by not spraying every year. One year you'll get hammered by a disease you can't cure like sclerotinia. If you're happy to accept the risks then fine - there's no right or wrong answers beyond what level of risk you are prepared to accept. I don't take risks with my employer's crops. With hindsight, you're well ahead with sclerotinia so far - 9 years since the last outbreak so my annual one timed dose hasn't really paid off so far.

My savings in my post above were from N not needed, not PGR.

Yes, but I'm not your agronomist and I have no vested interest in lining BASF's pockets either. If it was knee high by now then I'd consider a dose of teb. Wait and see what winter brings then manage the canopy accordingly. The pigeons won't bother that. A decent frost will knock that back. That's a nice position to be in. Pat yourself on the back

Drilled on the 14/08/19 straight into the stubble with chopped straw using a Vaderstad Tempo @ 60 seeds m2. Rolled once and slug pelleted. It rained as the drill left the field. There aren’t many weeds as the chopped straw has acted as a mulch. No flea beetle spray even though it was covered with them most evenings. 30kgN Pre drilling. Only spray it’s had was to take out volunteer cereals.

I would leave it well alone because the real decision making will come in the spring. I would refuse to spend much money on a crop that could be going backwards big time because of flea beetle larvae bursting out of the stems.

thank you for the advice, I won’t do an autumn growth reg. I might need some bigger dogs soon though.

The first decent frost will pull that canopy down & make it easier to see your dogs until mid March. Then you can worry about PGR.

I would use Caryx again if we still have it, in the spring again. Even my early drilled stuff isn't doing a lot at the moment and I am very fearful for my contact HEAR rape it still can't get away from the CFSB

Thinking of putting some Tebuconazole on for Light leaf spot and to regulate growth. What rate would you use to give the best/max growth regulation? Has anybody used Toprex?

don't get cocky, it is very easy to overdose with that product
