Evening I’ve been seeing a few post of people pricing up steel frame buildings i usually make mine myself but this time I’ve decided to film it here is the YouTube link.
I have tagged this link.
Or my you tube channel tom lamb
It’s cut the cost down by half.
Have a watch and would love to hear some feedback on it.
I go through all the prices at the end.

Now watched that.
Was very interesting to me as a novice at that type of shed building.
The marking out and bolt boxes are something that I was keen to see (as I've only ever put up pole barns with reel tape!)
That bedrock looked rum old stuff, the dog was taking a close interest 😊 The boy was enjoying playing with the tape measure too 😄

I agree, much easier to work with.
Why I asked was that I had a building put up a couple of years ago, 4x20’ bays, and the builder wouldn’t use wood as he said that the weight of the FC roof sheets would be too much for timber purlins.

Good video and confirmed a couple of I wonder how’s… but I really would recommend grinding off the red oxide (more if you are) before welding.

If you use the right grade and section the weight is not an issue. The older sheds that had bigger bays (18ft + ) had longer cleats so the effective purlin span was reduced, this however made them a pig to load on a lorry and would surmise why the cleats on most sheds are within the steel section now.

Similar to anti sag bars on Z purlins have found that joining the ridge purlins every 4-5 ft with a block and rod prevents the downward sag once roof installed which is another criticism of wood purlins.

Dependant on the climate and conditions there is the possibility z purlins will rot out long before the roof is done whilst proper graded timber should have same lifespan as fibre cement roof. Yes Zeds are galvanised but have seen sheds on the coast with rotten zeds, FC roof would still have been serviceable. If everythings dry then they are the engineered choice, if there's moisture it needs to be assessed as cost is long forgotten after value realised whichever purlin system used.

7 of my sheds are timber purlings and there fine.
If storing really wet corn or housing cattle I would use wood only because I have seen zs slightly rust over time with the damp atmosohere.

Great video. Really enjoyed it. You use angle for your purlin cleats rather than flat. Is this just to make it easier to work with?

Great saving, we have put up a dozen or so barns over the last 20 years gradually doing more and more ourselves as we learnt, next one we were thinking of making and looking at the savings it's a no brainer, one good tip we learnt was to make each bolt box lower by 20 mm than the previous one so the box gutters fit better and look neater, need to concentrate when pouring the concrete for them but makes life easier when erecting
