Campervan/welfare unit

As above really. Obviously going to run this through with accountant but what would the chances of buying a camper van to use for 2 months lambing and various other times then having its use as its purpose of going away in it. Could I put a percentage through the books for tax purposes?
Lots of people about onsite and communal facilities have been closed due to covid and it's not ideal for the women to have no toilet facilities along with somewhere to rest and change etc.
Am I as barking mad as my dogs or have a good chance putting g some through the books? Probably sleep in it more at lambing time than going away but be nice to have a unprotue get away now and again.

We have a VW California camper van bought new as a rental vehicle, 100% through business, just have to declare personal use. You could go down that route and also use for lambing. Demand will probably be high for the next year due to Corona so could get get a fair income in the Summer, depending on location of course. We decided not to rent out at all since the first lockdown as just too much hassle. Expensive to buy, but rental can be nearly £1000 week high season, insurance pricy for rental though. Rented out through Camperbug
Welfare unit might be more cost effective, could also rent that out when not used, would need servicing though. They do have built in generator though which might be useful?

Just buy a scrap caravan for £200 and stick it in the corner of the barn. If you don’t have a barn, buy a semi decent £2k caravan instead. As said before, it will be trashed by lambing anyway, which is easier to accept for a £2k loss than a £30k one.

Was looking at a cheapie here a month ago as a covid bolthole for family member! :)

5-600 quid will get a tidyish 4 berther on eBay. If no power, then a 150 quid model off eBay will do?

Would you be prepared to explain your reasons to an HMRC inspector? That is the real question of whether something can go through. Accountant should advise their feel on whether it is reasonable.

With private use, a basis of apportionment is important, percentage of nights spent seems pretty reasonable.

As others have said though, probably be wrecked after a lambing season. Whilst going through the business could make it a tax deductible loss, surely it's better not to make the loss......

Just planning ahead, last year was a nightmare with no childcare either, wasn't fun with 2 kids stuck in pickup all day. If only we could have 1 vehicle to cover lambing for us to use and kids a warm safe bolt hole and then something decent to get away in....

used 1 years ago, parked it inside, boots off and waterproofs off outside. bucket to prewash hands. Certainly didn't get wrecked at all lambing over 1000 sheep.
