Car in hedge

Found a car embedded in one of our hedges yesterday evening, no driver, nothing in the car to give you a clue who owns it. No keys in the ignition. No one came round to the house to ask about moving it even though it is on the paddock out the front of the house. There is also a house on the roadside 20 yards from where it it the hedge.

It’s still there now. Have reported it online to the police.

Can I pick It up and move with a telescopic so I can repair the hedge? Can I scrap the car? It’s a 20year old Mazda it looks abandoned, no tax, no mot

I was told by the police only a couple of weeks ago that if the vehicle is on your property you can do what you want with it! I took this with a pinch of salt though. If you’ve repotted it to the police they should be able to give you the owner’s insurance details as well then you can claim for damages to the hedge/fence, I’ve just put a claim in for 2k to re plant our hedge. Take plenty of pictures then move the vehicle, if it’s not insured weigh it in as that’s all the police will do anyway so may as well get something for your trouble.

In the days when the XR3 was THE car to ‘borrow’ for an evening out, many were either abandoned and stripped or abandoned and burned.
Likely this sounds similar🤣
I had a special place to stack them if there were more than three in a month or if there was only one it was carefully placed at roadside, with one half on the carriageway.
The Council always took the remains away, although someone thought the stack was a multiple car pile-up and rang to ask if the drivers were ok.
So IMO, push it onto the road and drag it to a lay-by and it will eventually go.

We had someone claim against our insurance for dragging them out of the hedge and causing the damage. It wasn’t them going in front first that did it honestly. So stuff stays until recovered correctly. Bit tricky in this case if you need it fencing.

Aren't you meant to advertise it, "If not claimed within 14 days it will be assumed to be abandoned and dealt with accordingly"? I think there is a specific offence of 'stealing by finding' but I'll leave it to someone else to look it up.

Car now gone, presumably someone’s dragged it out. At least I can get on with a bit of fencing now.

Would have been nice if they’d come round and apologised about the mess they’ve made

We had a car through the fence last week, they managed to recover the car before we saw it. Neighbour saw it go by on a lorry but obviously didn’t take any details. So that’s a job just down to ourselves then 😡

Document your time and if you have to dispose of said vehicle make sure all costs are incurred by the last owner.

Never let the vehicle go until you have owners details, have acknowledged fault and accept financial responsibility.
Here in NZ its illegal to crash a vehicle onto someone's property without notifying the property owner or their agent immediately.

Any damage you do you could be liable for. Personally I wouldn’t touch it.

Take photos.

Notify your insurance company. Submit a claim to them for any repair work and leave them to recover from the third party.
I have been told this but I was also told if the car has destroyed a fence you have a legal responsibility to repair fence to stop livestock escaping and are allowed to move a car so you can repair fence.

local farmer had a bad corner, cars failed to get around frequently, some knocked at his door, others got their mates to pull them out etc.

found 1 unattended, removed tax disc, left note to see him for its return.

pc plod turns up, tells him to replace the disc, or we will arrest you. WTF.
