No, just a couple of local chaps who have photography as a hobby, one of them is a plumber who works for me now and again, and his mate. They've been here regularly for about 18 months now, they sent me these as a sample of what they'd managed to get.

It would be good to see this thread resurrected. From a promising start of around 300 posts it seems to have petered out. Here's my contribution of a young roe doe, one of a pair, photographed on my farm road last July, literally from my back door. I had to shout at her to get her to lift her head and pose!

Another hedge goes in. Finished for this year now.

Whenever one of my friends moves into a new house, I tell them "Plant trees. If they are in the wrong place, ten minutes with a chain saw will sort it". Not an exciting photo but it shows half a batch of trees I bought about 25 tears ago for £30 in the local mart which took a couple of afternoons to plant in a rough corner. I have already thinned this lot which kept me warm for most of a winter. The tree on the corner is about 15" in diameter.

Cripes, wish I could find a load of trees for £30! They are dear as fudge to buy normally.

There were green shoots on the bunches of whips. But I was standing next to a forester who said they'd be fine if I soaked them over night. No one else would bid! He was right.
Forestry companies often throw young trees out at this stage. The Forestry Commission used to give trees away for nothing to small farmers but stopped because the nursery companies objected.

has anyone taken cuttings & made their own hedge from hawthorn etc?

Not really worth the bother in my opinion, they are about 40p each or less from a nursery if you buy several.

i get the commercial aspect , but to do a few with kids and watch them grow could be quite rewarding

Dad and I started planting in 1960. I remember buying 6,000 seedlings, 6 inch high for a farthing each to grow on in transplant beds.. I think that was less than a tenner.
