Cost of a 1000 ton grain store

Building a shed for £200k is one thing if you’ve got the cash to pay for it.
The scary part is the finance if you don’t, £200k at 7% over 10 years adds £75k.
Rates will come back right enough, but it’s a sobering prospect if they stick where they are.

How do bins compare to sheds price wise?
Think they are cheaper but not very popular on farm as cannot change use. Commercial and central stores like them for segregation. I can only think of one farm around here that has installed new bins in recent years.
We took some 80’s bin system down last year, far too slow for modern farming and a health and safety hazard.

Not only the above but a vermin hotel. No end of hiding places for them. We are just starting to clear out our old store. 60 years or so in place, and fine when there was lots of labour on the farm. However it is all ladders and pits, and the machinery is starting to wear out with plenty of patches on the conveyors. Looking at options to how we move forward, but this will make a good machinery store freeing up other buildings for other uses.

Yes good point about vermin and labour. Upkeep is much more expensive aswell.

I’ve priced out door bins and they worked out quite a lot dearer

You can tip grain in artics at7.5m going higher unless you can fill it deeper is a waste of money
Still not sure why you’d want artics tipping in your grain store? I am for grain to leave in artics not come back in them 😂

as far as I can see aslong as you can tip a 16/18t trailer right up in there you should be golden.

I thought @Clive farmed most of the West Midlands, so would be hauling back to store in artics! :cool:Good thinking on his part to future proof the buildings for alternative uses, the extra height although more expensive initially will be insignificant in the long term.
What’s to say lorries don’t get bigger tippers, had a load of Fert here last week, 28.2t, all on the deck, trailer was 14.2m long, rather than the usual 13.6m.

Used to think 16 foot was high. No harm going higher, heights cheap

In our case because we buy in cereals, soya and limestone for the hens. An undercover tipping option would be very handy.
