Last couple of mornings my dmax has started but won’t rev and struggles to tick over but if you turn it off and start it 5mins later it goes fine for the rest of the day. It is due it’s service so will it just be dirty diesel filters or do I need to investigate further.
TIA .

It's due a service, so get it serviced and change the fuel filter. Then you will know.
It’s booked in to the local garage but I thought if it was a problem that somebody else has come across, it could be remedied that day rather than having to book it in again or risk a complete breakdown on the M6 taking sheep to the auction.

Change the fuel filter yourself before the service as it's not part of it. If the light hasn't come on there's a chance it's never been changed

It’s not an official dealer and he always changes fuel, oil and air filter, but that will be a year ago or about 14k miles.

What year of Dmax is this? And do you have an EML lamp on?

Many common rails require a certain target idle speed before they enable the throttle at all, so if yours isnt able to due to a problem it will stay unresponsive to the throttle.

Sump oil thats the wrong grade (too thick) can cause it, or you may have a suction valve or EGR valve sticking - both of which are common faults on these trucks.

There has been literally reams of software updates particularly for the 2.5, and at least 6 for the 1.9 to address (some may say they're never properly right) all manner of running issues and it is wise to make sure it has the latest iteration.

By all means get your local man to service it thoroughly, and go from there, but you may be visiting a dealer anyhow.

My navara had the butterfly valve broken off the egr and did similar. Was a bitch to start and wouldn't throttle up. If I did I stank kind off like hot tarmac out of the exhaust.

Don't worry about it @hally ours (and our scanner man's) is the same - ours has always done it.
Before you turn the key, press the throttle pedal up and down a few times and then start it on half throttle - she'll be fine (y)

Have you been running it hard or just pottering? a lot of problems are now due to ‘cold’ running. Engines are not worked hard enough. Diesel engines need to be on their knees for a propotion of running time to run hot enough to run the exhaust hot enough

Yes could be the issue, school run about a mile to the bus straight uphill with a cold engine and shepherding daily

If you can next time with full stockbox or similar keep to about third gear and keep revs between 3 and 4000rpm on every hill that you can. Do it with a warm engine. Refered to as an Italian tune up 😂😂

A 1 mile school run from cold then a part day chugging around at near-to idle is the root cause of your issues. Expect the sump is full of diesel from constant regens too. They do need working hard pretty frequently to keep the emissions gear clean.
