Hi. Just wondering what a dairyman should be earning? Responsibilities include x 2 milking, rearing calves, vet work, pc and admin, 10 hours a day, 12 days on 2 off, with accommodation.

£40k minimum 'package' including accommodation etc.

Farm up the road has herdsman on £40k plus free 3 bedroom house easily worth £8k and that's for 11 on 3 off, so nearly £50k. There are on a Tesco contract mind.

So. 3 bed house and free council tax. 31k and 35 holidays. Every second weekend off with Friday. 11 days straight. Main duties would be in charge of milkings, feeding calves and vaccines etc, vet work, dry offs and general cow health, all cow and calf admin. Based on a 10 hour split shift but averaging 12 hours a day. No training provided/ investing in for AI or foot trimming. Fair?

40 hrs @ basic 10 at 1.5 time (Mon-Fri)
Weekends are 20 hrs Sunday 15 hours Sat divided by 2

I make that hourly rate x 72 per week. Even at £40k a year, that's a basic rate of about £10.00/hr for what is in reality managing a quarter of a million quid's worth of stock. Shocking really, isn't it?

I would suggest a salary of at least £30k plus bonuses for things like no calves born, calves reared to 6 months, hygiene, Calving Index, target hit for mastitis cases etc.
