Post 89 above. The magazine of the Rare Breed Survival Trust ("The Ark") used to occasionally advertise tattooing kits in the back. The pliers take individual letters, like an old printing press, then the skin area is liberally daubed with tattooting ink, and the pliers are applied with a sickening crunch. Not nice but probably more humane and over in one go than the long tedious job of writing all the letters and numbers in with a reciprocating needle!
 
Ive seen dog with EID tags on their collars but never seen a dog with a tag in its ear.

Usually strays tagged to show they're neutered and jabbed for rabies.

Places like Romania and turkey.
