I had an unpleasant telling off from trading standards today because my children feed their 3 pet chickens vegetable peelings.

Whatbif they roam round the yard , peck a worm or two ,maybe a snail ,eat grass , run round fighting overbthe mouse one of them found , Feckin madnessThe issue is that kitchen scraps increase the chances of salmonella in the chickens.

How long did it take the chooks to eat your grandad ? had to read it several timesI remember feeding the chooks with my grandfather. All the day’s peelings were put in a big bucket to this a few generous scoops of mash was added, this was topped up with a large amount of hot water. My job was to stir. I can remember the smell now writing about it. My uncle live in the house now and he still has the bowl the peelings were kept in.
It was back in the 70s so I assume too late to prosecute me for this admission now.

There's a lot lower risk of high levels salmonella outside of a kitchen where all sorts of animal products are handled - raw, processed and cooked. I seem to recall reading an article where tests done on free chickens showed less than 1% infection rates for those not fed scraps compared to something like 25% for those that were.Whatbif they roam round the yard , peck a worm or two ,maybe a snail ,eat grass , run round fighting overbthe mouse one of them found , Feckin madness
Better if you cook all veg waste ,used to boil taties for hens in an old copper , they love themThere's a lot lower risk of high levels salmonella outside of a kitchen where all sorts of animal products are handled - raw, processed and cooked. Yes, the problem is that there's too many people who just pile up a load of leftovers etc., and just chuck it out for the chooks... thus ruining it for those who do it properly!Better if you cook all veg waste ,used to boil taties for hens in an old copper , they love them
