Dusk

I appreciate that dusk is getting earlier and some tractor drivers may have forgotten about driving in the dark. Came across 3 tonight towing trailers , home I guess.
First , lit up like a Christmas tree all beacons and work lights on , completely dazzling oncoming traffic making it impossible to have any idea of its width or whether there was anything behind it. Turned out to be a large grain type trailer.
Second was on side lights , pushing it then with the light , 5 minutes later out of the gloom appears the third with no lights at all.
All three should have been pulled over

Yup, occasionally meet these on the A12.
Can’t see to save my life. Or can’t see coz there’s only one light.
FFS, it’s not rocket science to use the correct lights or for that matter get those broken lights a-workin’.

Normal tractor side and headlights are dreadful that’s half the issue. Borderline dangerous how little they light up the road.

So you stick an odd work light on, maybe the ones on the door rails, and you can actually see, but other folk get blinded.
It’s up to the manufacturers to put actual decent headlights on these £150k machines, they should be LED like cars maybe even adaptive so they put black bits over oncoming cars.

I think the led lights that are brighter than standard are to blame, plus no one thinks that tractor headlights are higher than a car and tend to have them set for field work instead of road. Than again they normally drive on the road with all work lights on.

Why does a tractor need to run about on the road with twin beacons flashing all the time?

I don't need beacons lit on the pickup when I'm just driving along the road?
I would think location, size of tractor and implement width have to be considered. We have a dual carriage way that we use and busy roads joining it, you’d be surprised how hard it is to miss a 3m wide 200+ horsepower tractor coming down the road 🤦🏻‍♂️.

I have wondered if the beacon on the back of my drill effectively masks the indicators. Equally likely is that the cars overtaking me turning right just ignore all the signal lights.

I think tractors definitely need some form of adjustable dip headlights lights from the seat, to be able to compensate for heavy mounted implements. The headlights seem good enough to me on newer tractors, but my dip beams are all set low to avoid dazzling in particular conditions. Dip beams barely shines up the road though when unladen as a result.

Well for balance, today I was moving header with telehandler on single track road with no beacons or lights but in daylight. Indicating to turn into a field car came flying past entrance I was 20 yards off and sat in middle of road on horn. I had to get out and tell her to look at my indicator and for her to look at the gateway just behind her. She was quite apologetic but absolutely oblivious to everything on the road and around it… maybe she might have seen me with beacons or massive LED indicators 🤔

The Irish have an expression to sum them up.... "feckin' eedjits".

My pet hate beacons , if some needs a beacon to see a tractor they should be on the road. Look at me lights i call theM
Ever had to back up a couple of hundred yards with a loaded trailer on a narrow road because the car driver is 5 metres past the wide spot and can't reverse back into it? At least if beacons are on you feel like you've done all you could 🤦

It ain’t just tractor drivers, some lorry drivers have a bit of a thing with hazard warning lights, have had milk tanker drivers and feed lorry drivers with their hazards on all the time they’re in the yard, if I can’t see something about 30 foot long and fifteen feet high, are hazard lights really going to help?
I presume it’s something they’ve picked up on a CPC course ?

A12 an hour ago;
First pic.
Four LED lights on the rear of this machine at 1.8m off the ground pointing parallel and for a car driver, full on in your eyes, then the crawler immediately ahead that I dared not photograph but this had two older and dimmer incandescent lights on the cab and the usual dim and dirty side light and the other wasn’t working.
Second pic
JDeere, headlights in everyones eyes.
Not that dark to be dangerous but they all left spots for several minutes. Half an hour later they would have been nasty😢
