Feeding pigs straights

We have 5 sows and finish and sell all our pork through direct sales. Looking into reducing our feed costs by feeding straights instead of a nut. Does anyone do this?

What do you mix to feed sows at different stages and growing pigs?

We used to buy a pig blend in a tote bag when we had a few pigs to fatten. Had to make sure that it was used up quicker than the sheep or cattle blends as it would start to heat and go off.
Was good stuff but shelf life was to short for a few

I mill and mix, I mix 6 rations to get them right for each age and weight. Total feed produced about 15 tonnes a week.

Mineral balancers are very important and are different in each ration, you would have a great deal of difficulty sourcing the right balancing rations in the quantities that you need I think, they have refused to make me half tonnes for example.

I finish only about 60 a week and a tonne of minerals lasts between 6 weeks and 6 months for me depending on which one it is - weaner, grower 1, finisher 1 and 2 and 2 more for the sows - lactating and dry.

Sorry to rain on your parade.

Thanks. I have toyed with the idea of feeding our dairy cows straights and thought it might fit in with that but sounds like it ismore complicated than i thought. Cheers

Although not keeping pigs at the moment , have been on a similar scale to yourself this past five years , (5 - 10 Berkshire / Gloucester sows ) and selling everything direct.
We fed a blanket 13% sow nut to everyone and at times also fed up to 50% milled wheat or barley alongside for the same reasons as your thinking.

milled it ourselves through an old mill. - be sure to count your time when considering this.

have also had good results with apple pulp and whey.

it doesn’t have to be complicated, no disrespect ment to pan mixer above, everyone does things differently.
with rare breeds on our scale it worked for us and the stock looked well/ were healthy and we produced a good end product
