Ford 4100 - Inherited and looking for information!

Hi All,

Long story short, I have inherited a nice Ford 4100 tractor, see images below. The tractor originally came from Greece and was used as a farm tractor - I think this is why the exhaust has perhaps been re-routed? I am still learning about the 4100 and trying to understand more about the tractor.

I know there have been some changes from new, different seat and steering wheel, wheel colour should maybe be white on the rear. Spool valves have been added which I imagine were not standard, along with the LED working light!

Having found the forum, firstly, any ideas or info from anyone about what I might have would be interesting to hear! Secondly, I now need to register in the UK with DVLA. I presume the best way is via a club - probably the Ford & Fordson Association. It has not been previously registered in the UK and I don't have any documentation.

Thanks
Rich

Looking at placing of mudguards I don’t think it is a narrow version. I suspect that the wide rear wheels/tyres are not original fitting.
Interesting that there are power steering rams on both sides of the tractor. Lights are not original factory fitting either and I suspect are later additions so perhaps left the factory without lights. Unusual hydraulics quadrant as well - 2 levers?

I think it’s a low profile vesion for working in orchards in my expert opinion. I saw a lot in Florida for pulling mowers in Avocado and Orange orchards I think thèy call them SU models in the states. International made similar. Narrow tractors have cranked lift arms.

Patrick Pawsey from 'Ford & Fordson' to register. Really nice chap and makes it very easy.

Your best bet is joining some of the Ford facebook groups if you are on faceache?

Thanks so far everyone! I will join the Ford / Fordson Association and reach out to Patrick.

Thanks for info on the narrow / orchard versions. Having looked at some brochures on EBay it seems the narrow versions were perhaps badged 3600 with an option of the 4100 engine, so not sure if this is one of those, but the re-routed exhaust would make me think it could be. Will also post on some Facebook groups!

4600 Q cabs had that arrangement of 2 levers.. similar age I am guessing?

Just a pretty much standard ford 4100 with power steering it was added to the tractor line up in 1976 when the 600 series was introduced as a new model.but was already built for the French market as a 3055 in the thousand series era.3000 front end and 4000 back end. the new 4100 had a 3600 front end and 4600 back end it’s the only ford tractor with a longer stroke engine than the bore.4.2 bore x 4.4 stroke 52 HP.

Wonder how hard it would be to buy a bonnet without the exhaust hole?

Dad had diesel major with exhaust under the floor to the back.. until it rotted away and a conventional one was fitted the went up the side of the bonnet.

Something I also considered, if it was originally with a bonnet mounted exhaust and then it was re-routed, more likely that the hole would have been left or welded to fill the hole, but this isn't the case.

We Bought a 4100 new in 1977, I think, it was the first Q cab tractor in the area. Had the bubble cab which made the tractor look a bit top heavy. It wasn't a patch on the 4600, it was ten horsepower less but drank more fuel!

A neighbour of ours bought a new one with a safety cab in 1976. He used to cart 9 tonnes at a time to the beet factory with the trailer on the draw bar.

Carpenter Goodwin at Leominster do a lot of Tractor seats from economy to full fabric air and mechanical types - looks a nice tractor - they also do the parts for it incl. exhausts

That's a fantastic looking Ford 4100 you've inherited! It's great that you're taking the time to learn about its history and get it registered in the UK. Not having original paperwork can be a hurdle, but the club might be able to guide you through the process of obtaining documentation or age verification for registration purposes.
