Getting a little wet

More of my wheat is going down this morning,

Just noticed a patch of Exsept now gone down - first time for this variety in 20 years or so, here.

This bit survived well through the late lamented drought courtesy a broken drain just above it and, 72hrs ago, was really the only decent piece of wheat we had.

Two years ago barley went flat pre grain fill. Yielded close to two ton a hectare less than that which stayed stood until it brackled just prior to harvest. I'm praying to the gods mine stays up .
There's no point growing it if you let it go flat. We've had acres of spring barley go flat in the past.

Best thing for it if goes flat before grain fill is the mower, then get stubble turnips or kale in behind it.

In my experience it generally goes flat at the peak of grainfill when its at its heaviest. Mid July up here when we seem to get thundery showers.

We don't aim for it to go flat. It's certainly not overall this year, nor at peak fill. At least once it's wet it can't get any wetter and the soil can take a fair bit.

Quite so, Chae1.

Our problem this year was that the weather turned from dry to wet just after the very last day of the window for late straw regulation on each crop closed.

This can occasionally happen from time to time, but never before for the barley, the wheat and the oats all in the same crop year.

I was thinking more of root lodging rather than stem. If it rains on my barley and makes the heads heavier, surely there is a limited capacity for the heads to get heavier IE they can only get so wet. After that the rain must make the soil wet. So assuming the rain is steady and light, we might be lucky as before now the heads were nowhere near fully filled.

Barley has had 180 kg, but probably not enough growth reg. as it was so dry.

Same here. Agronomist wanted me to hold off the second dose of moddus at t2. I took a gamble and ignored him on the hybrid but left it out on the conventional as it wasn’t as tall, but now it’s bounced back after the rain in May. Keeping everything crossed it stays up. 17mm so far here.

Ah well at least this thread will take priority over the "dry " thread and we wont be frying Farmer Roy head with our wet n dry complaining !!!! At the moment its a lovely evening and will get the silage finished , tomorrow get some spraying done . Still very cold at night and daytime temps are nothing special 16 degrees at best . Maize sown under plastic is moving very slowly but has gone very pale with the cold out in the open i dread to think . Cant really decide what it wants to know do i suppose thats normal Irish weather .
