Never seen grass seed so slow .
Never used to be a problem
So makes me think should change to Autumn reseed , was never keen as the clover never seemed to come as well . But its better than useless. Just seen a big lot of ground on the cost burn off for direct drilling . Not a chance in hell if we dont get constant rain

autumn risky for good weed control we find. Can get very wet very quickly.

I find spring reseed are better for controlling things like Docks as they are at the seedling stage, but annuals are more of an issue.
In an autumn reseed the docks get all winter to establish and are harder to kill come spring time.

We sometimes don't sow clover seed with grass, I just add it in after we deal with weeds.
I do sow clover with the grasseed after cereals as weeds tend to be less of an issue.
But I've yet to have an issue with establishing clover at any time of the season.

Spring or autumn I have no issue with either, job has to be done right.

In the autumn spray the weeds out sooner rather than later. Can go from the 2 leaf stage of the grass.

Serious perennial weeds in grassland due to be reseeded should be killed with kyleo and left to die properly before being ploughed up.

Spring reseeds really benefit from having 25kg/ac of spring barley put in first.

The climate has changed. I never had a problem with spring re,seed . But now the, last five year that is touch and go , slow coming out if at all , I'm watching 100 acres that was direct drilled with a niebour 3 weeks ago to see if he has any more luck

In my experience it is autumn reseeds all the time. We reseed between 6-700 acres a year IRG and Timothy mixes but always prefer autumn sown. IRG mid sept is perfect but happy till mid Oct. Always gets wetter in the autumn spring gets drier and lose your moisture. Case proven this year my 350 acres sown in September look great but rain stopped play for me so had to go spring for the 1st time in years and it looks grim with the lack of rain.
Autumn everytime.

Circumstances meant we have put some grass seeds in this spring. Very slow coming through due to lack of moisture & low soil temp.
Prefered method is sow in early August (Usually after W Barley ) Into moist warm soil. Germinate quickly Usually strong enough for weed control late Sept / Early Oct. Trim off with sheep before Christmas. Ready to fly in the spring.

What is the benefit of the spring barley? Just curious.

I put some rape in . It germinates quick and shield the grass seedling from the hot sun . But it's the constant wind that's doing the damage , we never used to get winds like this . I googled Mediterranean winds . I know why now . Climate change

The barley is sown at a very reduced rate, it is there for 2 reasons mostly. It grows fast and acts as a nurse crop. Also you can cut it off and use it for silage in about the first week of July. If there is a dry spell the grass may not have come to anything by then. Also, you can spray barley with regular grass chemistry without any issues. Not pastor though.

We like to reseed in the Autumn but this spring we have done some, westerwolds, it looks a very poor take and desperate for rain and if it stays dry it will fail. Fail like the Autumn reseeds did in 2018.
There is no easy answer but after such a wet winter we all knew it would drought. Odds on it won't rain again until we get the combine out.
