Black hessian sheets?please tell us more , i agree with you about the green ones. They are not heavy enough and we have to put loads of tyres on.

What's wrong with tyres? Its a fairly dirty sh*tty job whatever you use - unless its big bales in an indoor clamp - If you already have the tyres, might as well use them.

Its the wires put me off, the all started coming out at once, cost £2 a bag on the clamp, never lost a cow cos she choked on some pea gravel!

Plus if you get them all round the outside touching or overlapping they will seal the top sheep to the side sheet and not let any air in, tyres always seem to leave a little gap

I still tyre to tyre over the top of the secure covers ,’ever had so much waste as when just used heavy sheets bags and lines of lines on joins etc. Trying to get some tyre walls, anyone got any packs spare?

Our pit is adjacent to the kennel houseing - We used to run a continuous row of tyre touching tyre in line with the roofing nails (Every 4 ft) and a double row over the overlaps.

An all over tyre to tyre doesnt perform any better but uses at least double the number of tyres.

If I were starting again today I would use tyre walls without a doubt.

Hoping for minimal waste with this.

Dont include Michelins in your tyre stock (Steel Braced Radials) stick to Textile braced such as Pirelli.

Lovely job that, that's what we do. Gravel bags touching down the wall on top of platic sheet, having griped a trough of grass next to the wall so the bags touch the wall. Then green woven sheet on top, not touching the wall, then sidewalls on top. Absolutely zero waste apart from a tiny bit on the shoulder which cattle eat anyway. No sidesheets, wtf's that all about?!? We get lots of compliments about zero waste. We used to have lots of waste years ago and just accepted it as inevitable until we tried to make improvements.

We've used clingfilm and black plastic on top for a while with great results but last year we tried one of the new single black/green sheets. I was highly sceptical but it's been every bit as good so that's the way forward now. No cheaper but makes the job slightly easier,

Also take a bag of ties and some electrical pliers on the pit to repair any broken ones as you sheet up. Might try the UV resistant ones now I know about them.
