Hedge cutting rates

Around five years on from this thread, what is the going rate for hedge cutting nowadays? I know it will depend on location, supply/demand, etc etc, but it would be interesting to hear what everyone thinks. And how much more a heavy duty hedge cutter (for some thicker/taller stuff) vs a standard flail?

Think we are paying £45 an hour

edit just checked the last bill and we are
Good to see rates have increased a fair bit in the last 5 years.Im on £40 give or take a quid or 2.Ive taken on a few new farms after a good local guy finished, always take my time the first year cos there’s no chance of charging for more hours in subsequent years for the same area.Bledy tight farmers!

There’s a big difference in capacity of machinery, a 1.5m head with a 80hp motor and sharp competition flails to a 1.2m head with a 60hp motor abd lighter duty shaft and flails
Price per hour should reflect the capacity
When we got a 1.5m head we did 20% less hours for the same amount of work

Depends what the outfit cost, mine is a £30k tractor and trimmer. If you have a £100k outfit you would need £50/hr I reckon
Older tractor with zero deprecation
£5 an hour in parts
£3-5 in labour to keep it going
£5 so the tractor makes a profit
£6-8 diesel
£7-10 for cutter
£25 for operator accounting for evenings spent fixing cutter and billing customers.
£2 for insurance?
Anything missed?
£50 needed at least.
Modern gear more like £60 I'd say.

I feel the price reflects the much lower fuel used per hr hedge trimming compared to some of the tractor only jobs, could be £20 hr less.
I've always looked at it this way.
Minimal fuel usage, and tractor wear. You know your only doing one job all day. Not charging around on a tanker or trailer.

I’d have to say you’re doing the same job regardless of value of machine.£50 hour all day long.im sure people don’t shop about for older machines to do the job

So when I trade in my old t7040 that’s done 14000 hours of hedgecutting will the dealer give me and extra 10k because it’s had an easy life hedgecutting?
Sadly not, but during those 14k hours it will of burnt less fuel, than alot of other jobs general tractor hire would of seen it so. Probably had alot less wear, and if it was doing other harder jobs may not of been suitable to keep for 14k hours.

We charge diesel separately
A good reason it’s lasted 14000 hours is because it’s had no expense spared on maintenance, it does however have rough paintwork after been blasted with thorns for so long
I’ve had 2 other tractors blow gearboxes hedgecutting, £10k repairs each.
The reality is you need just as much as general tractor hire for the job, the only true difference is tyre wear, however this is also similar, the sidewalls go before the tread.
