International 784

Been offered a 784 with front loader and a bale spike
Got a few questions
1 are they considered reliable and easy to use machines for someone new to tractors
2 as it won’t fit in my barn (too tall) could the windows and roof be removed easily 8 foot tall and I’ve only got about 7 foot to play with
3 have read a lot of recommendations for a Massey 135 for similar equine usage to me
Only going to have light usage rolling Harrow move hay bales and topper or flail
Would u go for the 784 or pay a bit more and get a Massey 135
4 if I do go for the 784 is there anything I should be looking out for

There are plenty of things to look out
for....
Foot brake
Hand. Brake
PTO
Is correct fluid in transmission
Does it have TA?
There is probably considerable wear in
Steering with loader use
The cab can be removed to reduce height but after 40+ years the main bolts are probably seized

Some wear must be expected
Don't pay too much

You can strip the cab to mudguard height but that does leave you unprotected.
The post above coves most.
Check oil and water in the right places.
The 2 speed shift if fitted can be a problem and expensive if someone else repairs it.
The hand brake is often useless and can, by some, be repaired without a major removal of top cover.
2 wheel drive the centre steering yoke can be worn leading to interesting steering on the road.
If 4 wd you find that expensive if shafts and swivels worn.
The old IH is not bad to operate and parts can be found.
Buy the cleanest tidiest that has not been tarted up on the quick of any older mainstream tractor.

Reliability? The tractor is 40 years old. Wear tear and visual maintenance checks apply.

Nothing wrong with old Inters, they are as good as anything else 40 years old but personally to solve those other issues you mentioned I’d just get the 135.

Iv decided to pass on it
Have always had concerns about buying anything 40-60 years old but go around in circles between buying a Harrow and roller to tow behind my disco sport and possibly something like a petrol engine flail mower to also tow

and then think about something like a little Kubota or a 135 , how handy a front loader and ability to move soil and muck and also hay bales with a spike

then go back to worrying about a tractor breaking down. And then the circle begins again

never thought buying the mrs a field to keep her horse in would be this level of headache

I would buy the IH, once you have a loader, you will wonder how you ever managed without one, just because it is 40 years old does not mean it won't be OK for what you need and far better than tying to tow things behind the discovery. A 135 is good, but there seems to be a premium for them, so I would go for the IH and a loader is so handy.

You aren't the first. And you won't be the last.

What I've never understood is why horse paddocks require so much upkeep? Is it continuous grazing that does the damage? If so, has anyone considered subdivision and getting a bit of a grazing rotation happening?

Don't knock buying tractor on head just yet!
You will have muck to spread , will you load it in the back of Disco?
Is the horse's stable near to your house?

Stable currently about 5 miles away, but intending to move close

I’m not sure what it is but certain animals seem to create certain issues cows thistle horses doc, either they don’t eat it or I imagine their urine and sh!t does things to the soil that make these things thrive

I hate doc it’s a never ending battle that I’m losing, I know some people who borrow sheep off localfarmer to clean up field when horses move on to next one

doc seems to be a particular summer issue
U can spray something like dicstar and it seems to have some success
But it’s so persistent and seems to throw out seeds early after spraying as if it knows it’s dying and this is a self defence mechanism

mrs and her friends are fanatics they pick the sh!t out of the field daily and stick it on muck heap ready for farmer to take away

I asked about stripping the nitrogen from the soil and got something about worms.

I think a loader would be so handy and would save my back no end of pain ... my circle of indecision continues

I’m starting to wish I’d stuck to my original thought and said no when she started on about buying land. Seems to be slowly taking over my life. Could of sworn she made some argument about how much easier it would be if she had own land... feel like Iv been conned

I seem destined to become an unintentional part time farmer who instead of being paid keeps throwing more and more money at it. Iv stopped recording how much I’m in for as I’d rather not know. But it’s in the region of a nice 3 bed house around here that I could be renting out for £10k+ a year

Evening all, been offered a IH 784 that a neighbour has parked in a shed unused for 3-4 years wondered how people value it, got around 3500 hrs believe to be genuine, loader for it( though won’t be needed) good tyres and says everything works as it should , missing the rear window , not looked around it properly yet.

I’d like it to be used on a trailer straw chopper…. Would it be man enough?

We don’t own a straw chopper yet but looking at options to make bedding easier without tying up larger more valuable tractors.

The chocks of wood suggests it has handbrake issues. You could lower its height by 6 inches putting a lower profile roof on it.
