Keeping Ear Tips out of the sample.

I have closed the lower sieve a bit to keep wheat ear tips out and it’s done the job but we have to drive slower to avoid overloading the returns. Is there any other way round this problem?
We now have the lower sieves at 7 or 8 mm, where we had them at 10mm before and twice the forward speed without overloading the returns.
It’s aggravating the driver. He likes to get on and I don’t blame him.
It’s fairly rubbish in my view that you shut the sieve a tiny amount and it goes from letting everything through to slowing you down.

Ps if my bushel weight wasn’t so rubbish then I’d live with more tips but I feel we need to do all we can to help it. Have increased wind and retracted catcher tray extensions as well to clear as much rubbish as possible.

Bottom sieve 10 mm, Fan 750, extensions extended, fast forward speed, Drum 950 to 1000, one notch off fully tight.

Bottom sieve 8 mm, Fan 800, extensions retracted, drum 950, one notch off fully tight, but having to drive slowly due to returns overload.

In better stuff next so will open bottom sieve back up and see what happens by adjusting drum, personally I think it’s plenty fast and tight enough for wheat.

TBH I wonder if we have deceived ourselves. First sample was taken from first couple of rounds round outside of field. Second sample was on main runs after adjustment. It was just better wheat that threshed better maybe, and maybe we should have left the bottom sieve alone. Will find out when we open it back up tomorrow to speed the job up.
Thanks.

It looks as if there’s a bit of green too. I’d try deorner in but that will reduce capacity. There doesn’t look like any broken grains so thresh harder. What combine is it?
JD1085. Conventional old machine. In good wheat it will really motor. But heads are bit rotten this year.

Grafton wheat always seems to do similar here. This year the ears are very brittle. Should have been cut sooner really, but closing the concave or increasing the drum speed usually does enough. Never had complaints about screenings so I don’t worry about it

You're running your drum one notch off fully tight....?! 😲

I thought that!!!! Ours on a similar combine (1188) would be more like one from right open in good wheat.

Exactly that….and you can still hear it munching when going through the drum.

When you look at a drum and see the space the crop has to go through, it’s tiny.

I’ve been cutting wheat today and have straw coming out the back fully intact, with the chaff still attached to the ear.

A tight drum will snap the tips off before actually threshing them.

Firefly is cack ☹️ Avoid
I tried fo but they couldn’t deliver the Crispin I wanted so substituted it with Firefly. The heads have maybe half unfilled grains/tips and normally in good wheat I’d go with a more open concave and wider bottom sieve. I’m doing a salvage job here. I have increased wind to blow more shrivelled crap over the back and I’m happier with the sample. It’s just slow.
In better stuff tomorrow so we will open things back up and return to a faster forward speed I hope.
