Kverneland tellus

Can anyone tell me if it has to be a kv GPS receiver that you need for a tellus for GPS
for sect ion control etc

I'm currently feeding GPS speed and position to my tellus from a patchwork black box but I've got a spare raven antenna and was wondering if I had the right cable if I could use it which would the free up my patchwork

Thanks in advance for any help

That's how I put the signal in just now through the rs232

So what would I need to do it straight from an antenna?
I’m pretty sure the Tellus unit is just a terminal.it needs to be connected to a receiver using serial/RS232.

It’s not like most Trimble screens for example, which have the receiver guts built into the screen and you attach a GPS antenna to it via coax.

Yeh I know that's why we didn't get 1 at the time as I already had the patchwork but now I've got a spare receiver I'm looking at using it if possible
Just a matter of getting or making an serial RS232 adaptation loom so that you can extract NMEA messages out from your existing receiver. Two or three wires for the serial connection and two to power the receiver typically.

What receiver is it exactly and what cabling have you got for it?

I gave my kverneland man a ring and he's saying the same just need to wire up an rs232 so I might give it a go as I've got some spare cables lying around here somewhere I could chop up

That looks like a Raven Phoenix 200. See recent post here where SMID was trying to update his to get more recent firmware loaded.

What’s on the end of the interface cable - have you got a DB9 connection?

This quick release on the patchwork end and a screw on on the other

Ah ok. Not what I thought, that’s just a BNC coaxial connection from Raven antenna (a TNC screw on connnector) to the BNC at the Patchwork. The Raven unit you have is just an antenna and the receiver is in the Patchwork.

So for the Tellus you would need to get your NMEA from the Patchwork box, serial output.

So I can't just use the receiver on it's own then
Something not adding up (to me anyway). Can you take a clear photo of the nameplate/label on the Raven - I think its a Phoenix 200 - if it is, there should be a round 8-pin connector on the Raven.

Disconnect all cables/adapter on the Raven and take a photo of the connector on the Raven if you can.

Is there an adapter (nickel plated in your photo) positioned between the Raven output/connector (black) and the screw on coaxial connector?

The adapter is what patchwork supply with New cables as they don't seem to can get the screw on any more so they send you a double quick release with adapter to screw on

No it's just a single pin on the raven I'm sure it's a raven helix
Gotcha! Yep that's just a simple antenna not a receiver unfortunately. The Phoenix 200 looks very similar to a Helix.

Although the Helix and Phoenix use the same/similar casing etc, what's inside is very different. The Phoenix is a full GPS receiver (integrated with an antenna in the same case), whilst the Helix is simply an antenna.

An antenna is basically a passive device, it has no 'smarts' or way of calculating position, speed etc. An antenna needs to be connected to a receiver before it can be connected to your Tellus.

Folks often use the terms antenna and receiver interchangeably but they are quite different beasts.

Thanks for your help

I'll just stick to using it how I am just now then and see if I can find a use for my spare set up then

I thought it was a bit too easy:banghead:

As PS said, its an antenna not a receiver.
The blob on the roof can be an antenna, an antenna and receiver.... This can be confusing as most people call it a receiver.

Sorry to hijack the thread but is it possible to use the jd receiver instead of the Kverneland one,we have a Kverneland Fert spinner and two i-ploughs and would be much easier if we could just use the jd ones instead of having to change receivers all the time!

I'm using my patchwork to feed the tellus so can't see a reason why you couldn't use the JD for GPS
