The problem with Hydrogen is its extremely difficult to store. 1kg of diesel has about 10kwh of energy. 1kg of Hydrogen has about 33kwh of energy. But 1 kg of diesel is about 1 litre in volume and 1 kg of hydrogen is about 11 cubic meters in volume. So it has to be compressed and cooled and that makes it much less valuable after you have paid for the energy to do that. There are large underground salt caverns in Teeside where it is being stored at low pressure cheaply but to compress it into high pressure tanks uses about half of its own energy.
