Livestock markets options and ideas during shutdown

What about store cattle and sheep come August, think will be just the same in 6 months time, l think we will be the sfp in October this year, but if markets are shut how to you buy tups, breeding ewes or sell afew hundred just to get some money, things in farming carry on just the same.

Lamb is an expensive meat, now that exports and restaurants are down, its going to be tough to shift the main cuts - Obv the mince is cheap but while consumers are living on a tighter budget and uncertainty with jobs I doubt many will splash out on a leg of lamb. Things like sausages, pizza, pasta, chicken will be the main winners.

I'll tell my Hoggs they need to start making pizzas to pay their way then

The LAA have been worse than useless in coordinating updates letalone leading a coordinated approach by markets, there should be a single approach to show the markets can operate, as it is there appears to be chaos. This was the last “informative” tweet by the LAA - 4 days ago!

Do farmers who sell live not realise that everyone in the red meat industry beats to the same drum? If demand falls at retailer level, prices fall across the board
Has demand fallen? , or has it shifted to a different market that will be tapped into shortly , the latter i expect, Smithfield was overrun with public last week according to some reports

From what I understand consumers are buying more mince, which lowers the carcass value in beef and are consuming more chicken than other proteins, which impacts demand for lamb.

We're not eating less, we're eating differently. Kantar had a great report yesterday in the Grocer about the changes in buying behaviour.

how much capacity has chicken production , a lot in store comes in from thailand these days , can quite see mince (cheaper) being in demand maybe larger lambs / pork legs cut down into steaks would help rather than large joint

Markets will still operate as there vital for supply chain just means you can't watch stock sold and they may have to move live auction online with designated buyers wagons waiting at learage. Its all doable.

Breeding sales on the other hand......

Interesting statement from Hereford market

Frome Market announced staying open for all classes of stock and then cancelled the dairy section a few hours later. This confusion doesnt help
