The hours are irrelevant, they chose to do it to be fair, what they didnt choose to do was be the one who has to gamble their career on whether a patient who they probably havent seen for years is well/sane enough to posess a firearm.
The form clearly states ( the Leicestershire one anyway) that the doctor is not being asked for their opinion on the suitability of the applicant, just the facts from the medical record. The Doctor could only be found to be at fault if they have failed to pass on the correct facts.

With all due respect, the document is simple and straight forward. There is no medical required, it's a box ticking exercise, it takes minutes, some have had it completed while they waited.

Let's no blow this up into something it isn't.

For ref: Page 20/21 is to be completed by the Doctor.

and to quote a doctor who has filled 6 in in the last week, “some are straight forward, and others take a great deal of time to go through pages of notes and require a professional medical opinion’

if she says ok and 6 months later the applicant shoots himself or someone else she would be questioned and potentially has some liability, hence the GMU stance on it.

All the GP's can do is refer to the notes on the screen, and tick the boxes truthfully, end off.

I’m not saying anyone is right or wrong but a different angle on it could be that shooting is someone’s only release and a positive thing in maintaining there mental health and having there’s guns removed could their last straw, plenty of other ways to do yourself in!

Well a whole country’s worth of GPs obviously disagree with you otherwise there wouldn’t be a 8 page thread on farming forum moaning about it.
The form asks if the applicant has suffered from certain conditions or not. As I have have stated above it clearly says that they are not being asked for their opinion.

If someone needs a gun as a release from their mental health problems then they shouldn't have one.

Maybe I didn’t word it well, mental health issues doesn’t automatically mean suicidal thoughts or intentions, but shooting wether it be clays or game gets you outdoors and among people certainly take you away from your troubles for a while, all good things on the road to recovery, and if that’s taken away from you you could in theory slip deeper into a dark hole, and the fear of that happening could stop an individual going to see health professional with there issues

“what is the patients current condition”

what do you think that is?

It is in response to a 'yes' to any of the conditions listed, and the information will be on the screen in front of whoever is filling in the form, it is not a request for an opinion, as the Doctor completing the form may not have meet the applicant.
