Just got a Bluetooth yara n tester which is useful for this and just generally building up a picture of why n is in various crops

https://yarairix.com/en/ntester-bt can be used from GS33 onwards to determine nitrogen rate in the crop, we do not stock these in the UK though, have to be ordered via the website link......I would say too late to get one delivered for this season. However most of the agronomy companies have them so perhaps have a word with your agronomist he might be able to get hold of one for a day?

What tests can be done now on milling wheat (@gs39 now) to see if it needs an n top up?
Cheers dh

I used an N-Tester on ours yesterday and it’s saying it currently needs another 40kg/ha of N. It’s a milling variety and already had 160kg/ha and in a normal year would be due for another 80kg this week. Not sure what to do though.

I decided to put half amount on that I normally do at this time.
Why ? It’s so dry it may not get in, overall yield looks to be low.

Can top up with a product on ear later when we see how the weather is panning out. Or not.
We can do some saps on ears going forward as well.

Are the n testers pretty accurate- reliable?
All mines milling this time - everything from good to ugly!
Most has had 220-250n before the last decent rain (late April) which normally gets us thereabouts but concerned it was finished a bit earlier than normal- but glad it was now as been dry ever since!!
Cheers dh

I have found it of little use really.

It is a guide along with history of crops on your farm. The weather following testing can make so much difference to protein.
But I still do it as a help. As we can still adjust the rate of any on ear top ups.

Basically they always end up at 240-250kg N so rate wise they are pointless but they are helpful with regards to timing, although generally every 30 days is what they end up suggesting in a normal year.

What did they suggest? Another 40 kg/ha N?

No comment by them as to what extra N would be needed - they pointed me in the direction of CF Fertilisers who helped develop the test.

I decided to go with an extra 50kgN across the board (including the high field) just to be on the safe side.

I'll try and take samples and get protein tested at harvest to see the variation then. Next year I might do a tramline (or half) untreated but didn't fancy the risk this year.

The trouble this year is we don't know what the rainfall and sunshine will be in June. So how the f can we make an accurate assessment of the N requirement of a crop.
I am on contract for a good premium, but not allowed to use foliar, so I have only cut back a little. It's called insurance, or protecting my investment.

The other element is that you don't know who much N is already in the soil but not yet taken up.

unless you have the water to go with it it’s unlikely yield will dilute protein this year

i’ve only applied 120kgs - would usually go to at least 250kgs for milling but it’s not getting any more unless it starts raining significantly
