Any developments in the thermal spotter/monocular world? All very well having snazzy scopes but unless you want to walk around looking like your taking part in an embassy siege looking through your scope all the time you need a decent spotter.

currently got a ATN thor OTS 640, 7-8 years old now and chews through batteries like no tomorrow have used a Helion XQ38 quite a bit and it’s a lot nicer to use than my ATN and battery life 10x better but they don’t seem overly reliable! Anyone got the new HIKvision/ATN or latest pulsar spotters?

Only just noticed this but what do you want to know? All new thermal is so much better than it was and so much cheaper. Started with a guide spotter and then had a few pulsar scopes and finally settled on pulsar binos. Found a monocular was too hard on my one eye. Some people prefer monos and others binos. Most that use binos tend to prefer and stick with binos. Mine are the merger xp50’s, had them about a year and can’t see me bothering to change them for quite a while now.
you’ll always have spare parts and the ability to repair pulsar although other makes you can sometimes get a better quality pic for less money.
helion xq 38 were decent, I’ve got a couple of xq scopes but 50’s and they are decent enough. Personally I wouldn’t look past pulsar as you’ll always sell it second hand. You tend to get all sorts saying how good this and that make is and so much better than pulsar but usually they sell them and have an interest in them. Try and go somewhere you can look through a few and decide what you like best. What exactly do you want to spot and shoot with it? I will say try and get one with a rangefinder. I’ve got one on my spotter and scopes as it does give you a lot more confidence in exact shot placement.

Can get quite a keen price on pulsar stuff via a certain union that is involved in coordinating quite a few like minded folk……..tempted to just go with a pulsar XQ38f, looked through a HIK FH50 the other day and was very clear but controls seemed a bit fiddly, find the field of view and minimum zoom of 5x on a pulsar 50 and hik 50 way too much resulting in lots of scanning about.

An XP is more expensive but you get a wider field of view on a 50. It also performs a bit better in bad weather. That it just means you can pick out background detail better it rain etc. I’m in the hills here and need to make safe shot choices so background is so important for me. There is a new monocular out called a tellios or something but the guts inside it are interchangeable so the thinking is you can upgrade sensor etc without replacing the unit. A friend I shoot with recently bought an axion xq38 and in fairness it’s absolutely cracking for the money. There are good deals on pulsar if you look around but they often change and outdate models.

Slightly less serious and more sensible rat slayer, had a bit of a ricochet incident with the .22LR and will not be doing it again 🙈

Mates weihrauch hw100 .22 with my old photon nightsight which wouldn’t hold its zero on my .243 but on an air rifle is brilliant, just had 20+ rats, great sport.
The sport of kings, looking forward to digging my gear out. Had to empty the cupboard under the stairs last week… forgot I had bought half the gear in there! Got a nitesite viper for the rats but hoping to invest in something like a photon as can’t get used to the shooting style of an add on
