Opportunities in poultry

That's the type of arrangement we have, the eggs are collected and graded twice a week, we get a basic monthly payment plus an end of crop payment.
I think that's how most set ups over here work! Haven't heard many problems yet with that set up let, although i have heard a few rough stories with ones involved with a certain bowler 👀

And does it leave you a margin and a wage at the end of the flock after you've paid the mortgage?

We have set a wage for ourselves of £500/week which leaves us enough to pay the bank repayments (10 year loan). End of crop payment is worked out by total egg sales- pullets- meal- money already paid. From speaking to other producers total profit is in the region of £7.25 to £8/ bird. Time will tell.

Yeah we was told similar figures, with certain people that are good at the job fit to push it to 9.50 to 10 a bird

So that's the margin per bird over pullet and feed per flock? Taking them to 76 weeks? If so the mainland packers need to wake up!

Yes those are the sort of figures we were told. Our packer told us to use £7.25 when doing our business plan for the bank but that was the absolute minimum profit per bird.

so that profit is over 76 weeks and not 52? are staff and running costs included?

Yes profit is per crop not per year. Profit quoted has pullet, meal and medication etc, taken out. The cost of labour, electric, repairs (under guarantee for 1st crop) bank repayment and bedding (have only used 10 bales of shavings since November) is the responsibility of the farmer.

thats not a big useage then, whats the elec needed for lights and egg collection?

I'm not sure tbh, the manure belts run half an hour twice a week, feeders run for 15 minutes 6 times a day and egg collection takes about 2 hours a day. Lights are off completely for 8 hours at night.

Not sure yet as we only got connected 2 weeks ago, was on generator from start up. A neighbour said £3-400/quarter for a 16000 house but that was this time last year.
And what do the cooling fans run on? Our 32k bird house was pulling 23kw an hour the other morning whilst egg collecting, housed birds on a relatively mild day needs a fair bit of air movement.
