Pre-em herbicide on just sown beans

Just sown spring beans and the ground is very dry. Chance of rain almost nil. Agronomist want to put on Stomp aqua. I think it’s just to dry and a waste of my money.

Compromised activity from pre-em might be better than the post-em alternative.

The pre-em has to be on before bean shoots are within 13mm of surface (label warning) so you could hold off to closer to this growth stage in the hope for some moisture. If weeds emerge by this point add some glyphosate to the mix.

The pendimethalin is quite persistent but not very soluble so will need some moisture for activity.

having the same dilemma myself... spray has arrived but another 2 or 3 dry weeks and it may do more good in the can than on the soil! I didn't get the pre-em on some last year, the beans grew away well and apart from some patches of creeping thistle that I treated with a knapsack weeds turned out not to be an issue. Post harvest glyphosate once volunteers had emerged cleaned up the stubble of both weeds and beans... but in a late harvest year or a thin crop it might be a different story

This is eminently sensible. As said be aware post em blw control can be terrible. For the cost of the pdm I would be doing it, probably leaving as late as I dared.

I did both my peas and beans this week with Nirvana. Mainly because post-em BLW control is very limited. Hoping for a heavy rain shower tomorrow to help 'activate' it a bit.

I have not used pdm on beans since 2013 too much damage when it is wet
when it is this dry and planted in April the weed burden is not very high
last year we did not need to put basagran on the few charlock plants got destroyed by pollen beetle and had very little other weeds

Well I was still debating... but having found them already emerging today the decision has been made for me! Now if someone can tell my agronomist He can probably have most of the wheat fungicides back too...

we drilled with a CO with solo points. dint cover beans up well and 30% uncovered still dry in the slot. Slots are drying out and opening further. pre-em could either hit those beans that are germinating and coming up the slot, or sit in the open slot and get washed to the beans if any rain appears.
given that it is now mid april and no weeds have emerged or are likely to in next week as dry seriously thinking to miss out pre-em. what sort of soils have you growns them on and not had a problem? Limestone brash?

land is not traditional spring spring cropping land and has had mostly winter crops since the 1980s the odd field with charlock
we cannot usually get spring crops in till end of march
also planted with notill low disturbance a layer of straw and cover crop does also help
when we could use avadex we used it till it was banned for beans
I use bentazone if there is enough charlock it works particularly well after a good night frost
