I do mostly farm work with my Volvo so it runs on red.when out on a job, like last week I drain the red out,or should say pump it out and refil with white.suprisingly the filters change colour so the red don’t stain them.when back home on the farm I swap back again

There’s plenty of agricultural contractors with diggers. well there is round here
I’m sure there are but also sure a lot of them do non ag work, my neighbour has one and does a lot of non ag jobs ie concrete pads etc even if on (someone else’s) farm this is a non ag job. I have two, so far haven’t done any off farm jobs with them, I haven’t any plans to put white in them yet. I am allowed to do non ag work on my own property with them but not elsewhere. I think I’ll get rid of the bigger one(8t) when I’ve finished everything I have planned in 3/4 yrs time.

I hired 6 ton 360 with tree shear for some hedge work this last week for a couple of days,it came on red,you could see the red in the filter bowl,it had been sludging dykes out the previous couple of weeks, and was going back on sludgeing dykes,so lucky for me it was topped up on red.
In the summer I hired a roller, it was on white and it was topped up on white even tho I was rolling stone on a beet pad.

Plenty of suggestions regarding changing filters. I wouldn't bother. Put some Cherry through the truck at covid times (off road use only) and recently changed the fuel filter....... not sure what you'd expect to see considering it had 3 or four tankfuls through it, looked like any other filter to me. Did run it down to 20 miles remaining for a couple of tanks and even the diesel in the tank looked fine.

Be careful with the ag diesel folks as well as the dye they use a chemical marker that can be picked up at the exhaust................ least ways here in the Emerald isle they do.....................................................................................................

I wonder what our @Kevtherev puts in his kit, better come clean Kev.
It’s quite simple use red on Ag or forestry work
White for non ag run machines low and refill with either fuel.
Mini diggers don’t hold much in the tank and provided you can show receipts for white fuel to match whatever work you are doing then there should be no issue.

If I put red in while I'm using, it then drain and refill with white before returning it, I wonder if that would work?
Our local and very professional company said that was the way to do it. The guy told me that although in theory there should not be cross contamination the ministry have kind of unofficially realised that a full drain down and filter change is not practical. For the odd days hire the machine will likely have to run on white. For longer periods run the machine as low as possible after using red and then refill completely with white for the off hire.

Why are people so out of date! Red diesel is against the law in everything that does not produce food. So if you use a digger on your farm it has to run on white diesel, if you use a tractor and trailer to move it about it has to run on white diesel. The only time you can use red diesel on your farm is if you are delivering produce to a company NFU should fill you in . Farmers Weekly did a good article on this when the law changed

The only plant that can run on red diesel are ones that produce food or prep the land to produce food everything else has to run on white

How is field maintenance like cleaning ditches or fencing not for production of food? Or putting up a cattle shed or handling facilities not for food production? Be good fun trying to keep cattle with no fences,no handling facilities, no winter housing and no milking parlour 🤷‍♂️

Apparently laboratory analysis can detect far more than the naked eye 🤔

I think the forestry industry might be a little upset by that statement.
I think golf course machines are also exempt

As far as I am aware establishment and harvesting of biomass crops for energy production is not restricted to

I don't think we need to worry to much about all this draining down, changing filters and that there will be red residue or tracer chemicals.

I used to but got thinking about the delivery tanker, they change products in the pots daily and use the same pump and pipe to dispense it into our own tank. So I asked the tanker driver how they do it and this is when I changed my view.

If the deliver 1000 litre red first and say white on the next stop and say the pipe holds 100 litres of fuel they are so pose to change pots after 900 litres and use 100 litres of white to push the red out but sense says it won't push it as a barrier it will mix and hence there will always be traces of red in your tank.

Everybody gets so exited about resedue in the machine tank but no one thinks or cares about the tank in the fuel delivery tanker.

That's my two penny worths
