Probably you’re well informed but I think on mechanically steered fastrac like 3000/8000’s the gps hydraulic valve operated the steer-box assister ram. It effectively drives the steerbox backwards so requires a fair steer assistor ram.

I guess the concern with steering wheel systems is the force feedback on the steering wheel would trip out ez-pilot systems?
Be interesting to see what your steerbox assistor ram setup is and whether that could be upgraded

Look into AgOpenGPS if you fancy a winter project…full RTK auto steer for pennies compared to what it cost from big companies

Have a look at fj dynamics they use a steering wheel motor it seems very powerful - I have one on a arion 650 - works well - you cannot turn the wheel whilst it is steering- have to press the button on the screen to stop it though.
My maize coming up.

Aye up,

I can hardly believe I’m asking this, but what would be a rough cost to retrofit an autosteer system to my Zetros?

I really like the machine, it does and has everything I need and nothing I don’t need, it’s just the job. But I’m buggered if I can keep it straight on soft ground.

I am still driving parallel, although wiggling a bit maybe 1/2 a metre each way, which before anybody gets their knickers in a knot is fine for the products I spread, but as someone who has taken pride in the fact he can drive straight and parallel unaided for over 30 years it niggles me to see those wiggles.

The steering is quite heavy and there’s lots of feedback from tyre to steering wheel so it can be quite a handful. It’s like nothing else I’ve ever driven and I’m disappointed I’m admitting defeat, but I think customers expect top notch service and I always aim to give that.

Any ideas?

Cheers, Pete.

JD Electric steering system can run on a polaris ranger which is very heavy steering compared to a tractor or car so have a word with the local jd dealer as a used kit running an old dome are cheap as chips now as everybody has upgraded to the newer domes for better accuracy which you don't really need.

Hi Pete, there is a way to lighten the steering with some fabrication. You move the rod from the steering box to the hub which to a lever in stead of to the hub then another rod goes from half way up the lever to the hub. I haven't explained it very well but if you get a look at any of the newer forward control Mogs you'll figure it out. This will hopefully give your arms a rest and prolong the life of the steering box, also you can fit any brand of steering wheel type GPS newholland/case branded Trimble seem to be the cheapest but very good.
