Roll spring barley

What’s optimum growth stage for rolling spring barley?
Straight after sowing for a start; assuming that you haven’t.

No real experience of rolling it when emerged, but if it’s anything like winter barley or any other sickly looking crop then the roller is again one of the best implements on the farm.

Just my opinion, and others may well disagree.

If the surface is fairly clod free anyway and has been pre emmed, will rolling destroy the chem layer or will it just redistribute itself? Weather forecast looks dry and windy for next week and am thinking moisture conservation along with tillering.

I just drill a decent seed rate, it has preem on a day after drilling so I don’t roll it. It would get too smooth and blow anyway. The unidrill rolls it in well enough but I do stone pick the few that get thrown up. In a dry time I don’t want a huge number of tillers here on the sand.
Not convinced by rolling crops unless there’s a lot of stone. I reckon it damages plants and can squeeze air out of the root zone. I like to roll before drilling to bring up moisture and keep drilling depth consistent.
I think rolling crops is a bit like chain harrowing, subsoiling and mineral applications. The crop would have perked up anyway even if you hadn’t done it because it’s that perking up time of year.

Even on our heavy land where the bg risk is high, 0.3lt of liberator is a complete waste of time. Better drill later and keep rolling it.

Would anyone be interested in some science next year where you roll part of a field and let me come count tillers & measure final crop height?

Tentatively watching this thread as have a few fields that I never rolled due to heavy rain forecast after drilling. Now emerged/emerging and plenty of stones want pushing in..🤔🤷‍♂️

We had the do you / don’t you debate last spring when it was wet. Decided not to roll. We ended up with too many small stones in the straw and I think rolling would have reduced this problem.
it has led to broken blades in the straw chopper so this year we rolled after drilling.
