Second hand towing vehicle

Looking to replace the Trooper for towing the livestock box . Not interested in new,(well new not justified). Landrovers and Discoveries are well overpriced second hand in my view, and pickups, having read on here over the years about them breaking in half, filling sumps, poor paint jobs, dodgy gearboxes, and that was new,not worth the risk second hand at my budget . Budget between £5-£6500. Needs to be 3.5t towing capacity, diesel and reasonable £s for spares and service items. Will do 5-6000 miles a year, not all towing. Some Range Rovers fit the bill, what about Mercedes ML 320's and VW Touaregs, or are they just slightly beefed up cars? Views welcomed, but please no "for a grand more you can get perfection" I don't want to be tempted beyond budget!

I wouldn't knock pickups too much. Wouldn't buy a ex farmer one but plenty available from domestic homes never see mud. I could see expensive parts needed for range rover

If you just spent a little bit more.....😂

To be fair, you will be able to get a vehicle that can pull 3.5t legally and capably in that budget, but you will have to expect it to go wrong one day, and potentially a very expensive repair when it does.

I’ve been in a couple of very tidy Merc ML320s, both worth bugger all (one was less than £1000!) but very capable towing vehicles and in sumptuous comfort. However, when something goes bang, it would likely cost more than the truck is worth. What value do you place on that happening a long way from home, with a full trailer on the back?.

Ssangyong Korando 2.9TD has been reliable as towing vehicle. Over here you can get them for little money often with low mileage.
Have used a MB 609 pickup in the past. Great truck just very slow.

Rexton would be slightly larger and more on par with a trooper maybes?
