Finished shearing yesterday. 125 done in 6 hours end of last week and 85 done in just over 3.5 hours yesterday. I knew I could go a sensible speed once I got into some decent sheep ? ??
So that's me done for this year and done before wife goes back to work on Monday as well ?
How many more years will you need to clip do you think, before your new shedding revolution is up to speed ??

That's my own shearing finished for 2020

Good timing too, there were 4 ewes struck in the lot today!

First day on the new handpiece, and it is nice!

Glad to see the back of it a wee bit, the ewes were very inconsistent. You could get 2 ewes look and feel identical in condition and wool openness but they'd shear totally different...
Finish mine yeaterday and had 6 struck, set trailer up at a mates today ready for Saturday, shearers coming, he clipped 4 today just starting to show the signs

Any report on the Lister Pro? Is the new motor worth the extra money?

I'm thinking of getting one with a flexible drive, worm connection and Horner Suregrip.

I hear a lot of people saying the worm connection disconnects too easy though. Would I be better with pin drive?
Had worm on mine, switched back to pin for that reason, real pita.

Our first of three new shearing trailers is on its way to its new home today (pictures in the thumbnails below). The bulk of the design and steelwork was done by me, benefitting from @sheepwise 30 years experience contracting and learning what makes a good trailer.
  • Two stand trailer with chutes for sheep to exit and fold-out front extension for extra space.
  • Fully hot dip galvanised frame to last a lifetime.
  • Paneltim plastic sheeting on the race supplied by @JP1
  • Wooden boards on the floor for longer life than plywood
  • LED lights for maintenance free operation
  • Mains wired through a circuit breaker. Sockets for two machines plus extra socket for kettle/radio.
  • Hinged and sprung back race makes for a much faster and easier setup than races at a fixed angle that need assembled. Works at any angle from about 1 foot below the wheels to two feet above the deck.
  • Wooden blade boxes next to each stand
  • Ratcheting front yoke to hold decoy sheep
We have a second and third under construction, one with a stepped race and side extension for even more room to work. One is intended for our own use but would sell both if a buyer came along. PM myself or @sheepwise for details. Taking orders for next season too, with a three stand version potentially still to come ;)

It's older brother built last year can be seen working on The Sheep Game on YouTube:

worm was sh!t, next year i bought pin drive for my clippers,, literally dropped out all the time.

finished 2 days ago, odd one still sh!t to do, one so bad i let it through thought i will catch it later with dog and shear it in field! did that with another batch so theoretically still 2 to do!!!

As other have said started mine mainly for strike, next year i will crovect in mid may like i usually do money well spent!

Its nice to see them all clipped though and the sense of achievement it brings...

Lovely well made piece of kit with a lot of thought gone in to it. Glad the Paneltim worked for your project

@TechWise - cracking trailer!
Is the panel cladding from @JP1 harder wearing that stockboard. I’m guessing it doesn’t warp like it does ?
I’ve a couple of gates to clad on my loading pen, and I’m looking for options . Cheers
Its hollow inside with internal ribs arranged in 100x50 squares a bit like an internal honeycomb if you see what I mean. That makes it far more rigid than the stockboard or even a bit of thin sheet steel.

I bought it because I wanted something that would not warp in the heat. The trailer hasn't been used yet but it was sitting out in the sun all day awaiting collection and didn't seem to be soaking up the heat the way the stockboard does.

Its a far smoother and glossier finish than stockboard so I think it will be far easier washed down.

In terms of being hard wearing, the surface of the plastic itself I think is marginally softer than stockboard. Its a similar hardness level to MDPE water pipe actually going by how it feels to cut and drill. I would say its plenty hard enough for the job. We were sitting tools and stuff on it during the build and didn't end up with any scratches.

How many more years will you need to clip do you think, before your new shedding revolution is up to speed ??
I'm not sure. Half the first cross should shed and all of the second cross will or should. So I'll be shearing everything again as normal next year, then only half the hoggs will/should need shearing he next year until they have worked their way through till old age so half the flock with half shed or even full fleeces for 5-7 years or so? (until the first crosses are full mouth and going as culls) and then the second cross daughters should all shed. It should snowball pretty quickly when the first cross shearlings lamb their second cross lambs.
But I'll probably have to shear a few for the next 5-8 years or more even but in less and less numbers every year. Depends a bit on how stubborn the lleyns are at holding on to their wool.

Thanks @TechWise . Ideal aswell as anyone could tow it without a trailer licence.
Yes that's true but I think most farmers who need a trailer license make a point of getting it anyway so they can pull their livestock trailers etc. It's not hard to get if you make a point of doing it reasonably quickly after your car test before you've had a chance to pick-up bad habits and/or forget the technicalities! I remember the examiner telling me that farmers fly through the test without issue because it is easy to anyone with experience with trailers, even on a tractor. He said the test was brought in to get rid of people with more money than sense towing huge caravans and horseboxes with no idea what they were doing.

Both customers insisted on having no brakes because they cause nothing but problems on a trailer that sits doing nothing for most of the year and seizes up.

You should loan one to your uncle for a couple of days, just to see how hardy the construction really is? ???
